Registering for Your First Semester at Boston University!

Most first-year Engineering students will take EK 121 and 122 Introduction to Programming for Engineers, a Calculus course, a Natural Science course, a Writing course, and EK 100, the First-Year Seminar in the fall semester. If you have questions or problems, please contact the First-Year Academic Counselors Dan Tyburski and Sandy White by email (engfirstyear@bu.edu) or phone at (617) 353-6447.

Browse the Program Plan for each major. Undecided students should follow the plan for Biomedical Engineers if they are possibly interested in that major. The requirements for the Biomedical Engineering major will satisfy all other major requirements in Engineering. If an Undecided student knows they do not want to be a Biomedical Engineer, but they are considering either Mechanical, Computer, or Electrical Engineering, then they should register for the courses recommended for Mechanical Engineering. The requirements of Mechanical Engineering will satisfy the requirements for Electrical and Computer Engineering. If an Undecided student is certain they do not want to be a Biomedical or Mechanical major, they can follow the requirements for the Computer or Electrical majors together.

Planning and Registration on MyBU!

You will register for your courses through MyBU. You will first utilize the Schedule Builder – an online tool that allows you to create and modify your schedule before registering for the courses, so you can see how everything will fit together. You will then move your selection to the Shopping Cart and confirm your choices before registration.

Please note that EK 100 (First-Year Advising Seminar) takes place on Friday afternoon. This course is required of all first-year students and you will need to keep 3:35pm – 4:25pm free on Fridays for when you add it.

Please watch the “Planning for Fall 24 Registration” video to learn about planning and registration, then follow the step by step instructions below.

Using the Class Search, you can filter courses by academic department, time, location, or days of the week. Please note that your Calculus, Natural Science, and Writing courses are all under the College of Arts and Sciences. Your other classes will be found under the College of Engineering.

The Schedule Builder allows you to build and compare multiple class schedules before semester registration.

You can get started now on MyBU.

Important Things to Know:

    • Enter your BU Login in the “User Name” box and your Kerberos password in the “Password” box. (Don’t know/remember this? Contact IT Help Center at ithelp@bu.edu or 617-353-4357.)
    • Pay attention and see what the course requires (lecture, discussion, lab, pre-lab). Make sure you have all the components.
    • A class included in your shopping cart does not mean that you have a spot reserved for official registration.
    • Be flexible and remember that you have plenty of support with your first-year counselors.

Step by Step Registration Instructions!

After reviewing the materials above, you’ll be ready to begin registration. Our student portal is called MyBU. On there, you will find the Schedule Builder, which allows you to try out multiple schedules where you can then favorite your top choices. The Shopping Cart will let you save your final planned classes once it’s time to register. To get started:

  1. Log into MyBU using your BU username and Kerberos password.
  2. Click My Academics and then Fall 2024 Registration Planning.
  3. Click Enrollment on the left side of the page and select Schedule Builder.
  4. Select the Subject, such as CASMA or ENGEK, and the Catalog Number should then be the rest of course number, like 123 or 121. For example, searching for CASMA 123 will show you registration options for Calculus 1. The course numbers you need are outlined in our registration guide above.
  5. Click Add Course. The course is now in your Schedule Builder and will be listed below your search.
  6. Next you will select exact times for this course. In addition to selecting a lecture, you may also need to select a lab, discussion, and/or pre-lab, depending on the course.
    • Next to the course you just added, choose Select Sections.
    • Click the first check box on the right in the header row to de-select all sections.
    • Manually select the section(s) you wish to add. Again, remember to select a lecture section as well as any lab, discussion, or pre-lab sections, as needed.
    • Click Ok, then Save.
  7. To add more courses, select Expand Filters, then Reset Filters.
    • Follow steps 6-8 to add other courses to your Schedule Builder.
    • Click Save.
    • Keep track of class times – you won’t be able to register for time conflicts!
  8. Once you’ve added all your courses, click Build Schedule. You will be notified of any issues like time conflicts. You must resolve these issues before building your schedule.
  9. Now you can test potential schedules to see how your courses fit together. If you like the schedule you just built, favorite it by selecting the heart and naming it. You can then explore other potential schedules by repeating the steps above to experiment with other courses and sections. You may continue to save schedules by favoriting and naming them.
  10. After choosing your ideal schedule, you’ll be ready to add it to your Shopping Cart:
    • Choose Favorites in the top right corner, then select the three vertical dots
    • Click Add to Cart
    • Check the boxes of the classes you wish to include in that schedule. Then select Add to Cart.

At your registration time: Open your Shopping Cart and select the checkbox of the courses you wish to enroll in. Click Enroll and adjust as needed, as some classes may be full.

STOP: Review your course plan. Do you have a math, science, and engineering course? If not, please read the degree requirements.
