If you can build it, you can understand it–and then fix it.

Hailing from fields as diverse as biomedical engineering and electrical engineering, and collaborating with world-class BU colleagues in medicine, rehabilitation science, and computer science, our researchers are designing plants for carbon mitigation, personalized immune cells to cure cancer, functional heart tissue strips, and implantable biological sensors, to name a few. By blending their knowledge and pushing the envelope, these teams are pioneering technologies that will save lives and reduce human suffering.

A Problem-Solving Revolution

“The underlying philosophy of the Biological Design Center (BDC) is that by understanding, controlling, and re-engineering biology to generate new systems, we will revolutionize how we approach important problems in medicine, energy, and the environment,” says Director of the BDC Professor Christopher Chen.
