Ubuntu

A number of people at BU are using Ubuntu and its derivatives. Here is some information to help those wishing to use Ubuntu here at BU. If you’re new to Ubuntu you should also look at the Ubuntu documentation. Support for the BU community is available by email at linux-help@bu.edu.

Authentication

  • Log into your Ubuntu machine using your BU username, and kerberos password.
  • This is the recommended setup for on-campus users.

Security

VPN

  • Connecting your Ubuntu machine to BU, from off-campus.

NFS

  • Accessing NFS directories exported by other servers. NFS is the most common way to serve files from a unix or Linux server.

Samba

  • Accessing directories exported by Windows servers.

AFS

  • Accessing AFS shares. BU makes some software packages, like Matlab and Mathmatica, available via AFS.
