SPEAKERS: Ian Condry “Wamono” Boom: Japanese hip-hop DJs discover their roots in local funk, soul and disco Professor of Japanese Culture and Media Studies at MIT. As an anthropologist, Condry studies cultural flow across borders (e.g., hip-hop, anime). Sunanda K. Sanyal “Kimono Wednesdays”: Unpacking the Mechanics of Cultural Appropriation Professor of Art History & Critical Studies, Lesley University College of Art and Design, Sanyal focuses on the politics of representation and identity; and contemporary artists from former colonies in global discourses. André de Quadros "Stealing my Song: Exploring Narratives, Repertoires, Geographies" Professor of Music at Boston University, de Quadros is a conductor, scholar, music educator, and human rights activist. His professional work has taken him to over forty countries. MODERATOR: Sarah Frederick Associate Professor of Japanese and Comparative Literature, BU.
