Sophia Besch is a fellow in the Europe Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Her area of expertise is European defense policy. Before joining Carnegie, Sophia was a senior research fellow at the Centre for European Reform (CER) in London and Berlin, where she led research on European armament policy, the EU’s role in European defense, transatlantic relations, German defense policy, and the security implications of Brexit.

Moderated by Kaija Schilde, Jean Monnet Professor of European Security & Defense (2022-24), Director of the Center for the Study of Europe, & Associate Professor of International Relations, Pardee School of Global Studies.

This event takes place as part of the Jean Monnet Chair’s “Europe in the World” series. These events, exploring human, national, and European security from specific disciplinary angles, include works-in-progress talks showcasing the work of emerging scholars as well as lectures by EU-policy makers and security practitioners. The aim of the series is to prompt critical reflection by a larger public on human and regional security informed by cross-national experiences and a variety of disciplinary lenses as well as to introduce or emphasize EU perspectives into ongoing debates around security integration and global challenges.
