History & Location

Located in Boston’s South End, Boston University Medical Center  is composed of the Boston University Schools of Medicine, Public Health and Dental Medicine, and Boston Medical Center hospital. With more than 2,000 physicians and researchers, BUMC is a nationally recognized leader in cardiovascular medicine, women’s health, trauma, cancer Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, infectious diseases including AIDS, and spinal cord injuries. In addition, the hospital operates the nation’s first geriatric home medical program, which began in 1875.

Boston University Medical School

Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) celebrates its sesquicentennial in 1998. BU established the School of Medicine in 1873 by merging with the New England Female Medical College, which had been founded in 1848 as the first medical college for women in the world. The School of Medicine became a constituent member of the BUMC in 1962.

Boston Medical Center

Boston Medical Center (BMC) Boston University Hospital founded in 1855 and Boston City Hospital, founded in 1864, have been the principal teaching hospitals for BUSM. In July 1996, these outstanding institutions merged and created a new private, not-for-profit hospital emphasizing community-based care: Boston Medical Center. This new hospital represents the country’s first full merger of a public hospital with a private academic medical center and its hospital.

BMC offers a full spectrum of pediatric and adult care services, including primary and advanced specialty care, as well as outreach programs, particularly for the city’s homeless population. BMC is at the hub of a culturally, socially, and economically diverse population. Annually, BMC provides more than 858,000 patient visits and 129,000 emergency department visits. BMC has more than 4,480 employees, 1,227 physicians, and has an annual operating budget over $500 million.

Focusing on urban health, BMC is a founder of the Boston HealthNet, a partnership of the hospital, the School of Medicine and 15 community health centers located in neighborhoods throughout Boston. These community health centers provide health care and social services to residents of those communities. This unique partnership provides a community-driven urban health network that goes beyond traditional patient care to address the full spectrum of health issues facing families living in Boston.
