NEW FACES AT NOAA
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced his intent to nominate Barry Myers (LAW ’70) as Under Secretary for Oceans and Atmosphere at the U.S. Department of Commerce, a role that includes leading the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The BU alumnus currently serves as the chief executive officer of AccuWeather and previously served on the faculty at Pennsylvania State University. The nomination will be debated by the U.S. Senate, which confirmed Rear Admiral Timothy Gallaudet as NOAA’s Deputy Administrator last week.

- The U.S. Department of Education unveiled an updated Integrated Post-secondary Education Data System (IPEDS), which will now include the graduation outcomes for low-income students receiving Pell grants, as well as part-time and returning students.
- The Trump Administration has halted the processing of new non-immigrant visas from Turkey; however Turkish citizens who currently hold valid visas may continue to travel to and from the United States.
- Following the resignation of Dr. Tom Price, Eric Hargan has been named Acting Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Hargan was recently confirmed as HHS Deputy Secretary and previously served in several HHS roles under President George W. Bush.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health has announced its first concept clearances for fiscal year 2018; these are research topics that may become funding opportunity announcements in the months ahead. The eight topics approved include aging and cancer, dementia care and caregiver support, and sleep disorders in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Details on each concept clearance, including a research contact within the NIA, is provided on the NIA web site.
