Charge to the Committees

At President Brown’s request, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer Jean Morrison has formed two committees to help develop a clear and consistent institutional voice on the issue of Free Speech on campus.

The two committees have distinct charges but will work closely together and interact regularly. The Free Speech Policy Committee is charged with developing a statement that describes and affirms the University’s commitment to free speech. The Free Speech Operations Committee will review and revise existing University policies and practices related to speech and expression on campus. These policies cover a wide variety of areas, ranging from residence hall rules to guest speakers on campus. The Operations Committee will work closely with the Policy Committee to ensure that the operational practices align with the University’s overall statement on free speech.

The Free Speech Committees will conduct their work through this semester and into the early fall, when the proposed statement on free speech and accompanying policy revisions will be presented to University Council and Administrative Council for review and ratification.
