In Photos: Global China Initiative Visits Beijing and Shenyang

During the week of March 25, members of the Global China Initiative (GCI) at the Boston University Global Development Policy Center (GDP Center) traveled to China to present their policy-oriented research to policymakers, engage in academic exchange with partner institutions, and connect with Boston University alumni based in China. Team members including Kevin P. Gallagher, Yan Wang, Marina Zucker-Marques, Lin Zhu and Angie Ye, marking the first time this year the Global China team has traveled abroad to directly engage with policymakers, scholars and local partners.

For the trip, researchers and staff met with GCI partner the Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP) of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and participated an in-person workshop on “Global Debt Issues and International Financial Governance” hosted by CASS IWEP. As the international co-chair for the Sustainable Trade and Supply Chain Special Policy Study (SPS), GCI staff and researchers met with their Chinese counterpart at Liaoning University and shared the Center’s newest dataset on low carbon technology (LCT). GCI team also met with the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC) to discuss a joint SPS on South-South Cooperation. These two special policy studies are part of the effort by the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED) to advance sustainable international development. Elsewhere, the team met with the Center for International Knowledge on Development (CIKD) to discuss global development, green energy transition, industrialization and development finance, among others, as well as briefed the International Economic and Finance Institute (IEFI), a think tank affiliated with China’s Ministry of Finance (MOF), on debt restructuring, the Global Financial Safety Net and development finance.

March 25, 2024 – Talk in Liaoning University and Seminar on the Sustainable Trade and Supply Chain Special Policy Study under the China Council for International Cooperation on the Environment and Development (CCICED)

Kevin P. Gallagher gave a talk on “Debt Sustainability and Structural Transformation” at Liaoning University (LNU) to nearly 300 students, staff and faculty members. The event was hosted by Professor Ruyu Yin from LNU and attended by Miaojie Yu, the President of LNU. During the seminar discussion on the Sustainable Trade and Supply Chain SPS, Gallagher presented the novel dataset on low-carbon technology, while LNU researchers presented the methodology. Two members from the CCICED Secretariat also participated in the discussion and commented on the current progress of the SPS.


March 27, 2024 – Workshop at the Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP) of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS)  

The workshop on “Global Debt Issues and International Financial Governance” was held by CASS IWEP. The workshop aimed to investigate the key issues in the international financial architecture, including global financial governance, sovereign debt, development finance and the reform of multilateral development banks (MDBs). Boston University participants included GDP Center Director Kevin P. Gallagher, Yan Wang, Ying Qian, Marina Zucker-Marques, Lin Zhu and Angie Ye.


March 28, 2024 – Boston University Alumni Meet and Greet Reception

The BU Alumni Meet and Greet reception, held at the InterContinental Sanlitun Tongying Center in Beijing, brought dozens of BU alumni and friends together. The event featured Kevin P. Gallagher, alongside various GCI staff and researchers. Throughout the evening, BU alumni in Beijing also had the opportunity to engage with Ya Su, the Associate Director of BU International Alumni Networks.
