Yousuf Vawda is a member of the Working Group on Trade and Access to Medicines at the Boston University Global Development Policy Center and a Senior Research Associate in the School of Law, University of KwaZulu-Natal. Vawda earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Law (BProc), Masters in Law (LLM) and Doctorate in Law (LLD). Vawda practiced as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa from 1978 –2003, the last ten years as Director of the University of Durban-Westville Law Clinic. He has been involved actively in community and political activities for approximately 40 years, including housing, health and other civic issues. Vawda served on the Medicines Control Council (including as chair of its Legal Committee), the Board of Legal Aid South Africa (including as chair of its Legal Services Committee), and on the Executive Committees of both organizations. He works as a consultant on intellectual property law reform and medicines regulatory frameworks. Research interests and publications in the following areas include intellectual property and access to medicines, medicines regulation in Africa, and generally, the intersection between intellectual property, human rights, medicines regulation and trade.
