What Students Say – Eating Out
The following are quotes from students who were on the program.
Holy Cow has amazing burgers, and the student deal is really good!
Because it’s so expensive, I rarely ate out in Geneva. That said, the cafes and patisseries are fun places to go on lunch breaks. We would just walk into random ones and try them out; I think that is the best way. Cafe Boreal is a great place to hang out and study. It is on rue du Stand. They are open late and on Sundays, which is a rarity in Geneva. Definitely try a kebab while you’re here–they’re everywhere! You can get really great Indian food near the Butini stop on the 15; I forget what the place was called though.
Salsabeel near the UN (France stop on 15 tram towards Nation) is the best. Cheap, quick, great food (Indian/Pakistani) and the service is nice–the lady speaks english and is very kind
Coop Restaurant, UN cafeteria is awesome if you can get in.
If anyone is ever near the UN, the cafeteria there is highly suggested, as it is a little bit cheaper than its counterparts in Geneva because the prices are a little subsidized (or so I hear).
For burgers, I would also suggest Holy Cow, for sure! They have a student discount: 13chf for a hamburger, fries and drink, or 14,5 with cheese
1) Mollard: Sit out on the pedestrian-only space for a glass of wine and some great Italian food.
2) Chocolaterie, the patisserie around the corner, has delicious cookies, meringues, and hot chocolate.
3) Pain Palaiss is a chain all over Geneva, that has delicious paillochoc (like pain au chocolate but with melted chocolate deliciousness)
4) Hotel Edelweiss on Paquis is the cutest kitschy fondue place ever. They play an Alphorn all night.
5) Istanbul Kebab near Gare Coranvin has the best falafel
6) Rotisserie chickens from the market on Plainpalais are perfect for several meals.
7) The Manor restaurant is really good too, or go downstairs for (relatively) cheap and fresh sushi.
Chez Marino, right on the corner, has inexpensive and THE BEST thin-crust pizzas
Very expensive in general but a great economic option was Chez Ma Cousine. Also the cafeteria style food at Globus. And Le Pain Quotidien is great bakery/cafe (even though there are a few in the US)
Cafe de Paris and Relais de l’entrecote for steak. I also really enjoyed Lady Godiva for American type food. Celine et Sebastien is reasonable for quick sandwiches and coffee. I also hear Chez ma Cousine is good. For nicer dining, La Lacustre has great Italian and the place next to Chez ma Cousine in Old Town was delicious French. Globus is great gourmet food. Bains des paquis for fondue, but I also liked Hotel les Armures better.
Paquis has good tea rooms and restaurants. I love Espresso Bar for pizza (you feel like you’re in Italy).
Chez Ma Cuisine- hearty chicken dish and affordable! And of course Kebabs are always loved by all.
Don’t eat out; it’s not worth it.
Bains de Paquis is really good fondue and pretty affordable, especially when you split with someone. It’s a fun atmosphere. Other than that, Manor is a great place to go and eat. It’s really good once you start your internship to meet up with others in the program because it is central, or with co-workers because everyone knows it, you don’t have to worry about splitting the check, and it’s much quicker than restaurants. Other than that, eating out will be a budget breaker and I would recommend more making dinner at rue Muzy.
Restaurants and eating out- Celine and Sebastians is amazing and a great deal. La bodega (Spanish restaurant near Migros) is moderately priced.
Restaurants: To save money, I haven’t eaten out much in Geneva. Here’s what I can recommend:
In the winter, there is a temporary circular canvas tent set up between Mollard and the river, that serves delicious fondue. I can’t recall the name, but it was a lot of fun to go and share with friends.
A lot of people like Holy Cow for burgers, but as a vegetarian, I thought the veggie burger was yummy but definitely not worth 16 francs.
I LOVE getting sandwiches at Manor! Always fresh and delicious, and perfect to grab near gare cornavain before going on a train!
I’ve been to Wasabi sushi a few times and it is decently priced and fresh!
I also like to go into Globus and sample all the foods in the grocery store! Delicious olive oils, raviolis, cheeses…just don’t be greedy!!!
Kebabs (open late and relatively cheap), Chez Ma Cuisine, University of Geneva, Plain Palais Sunday market is a must!
The best place to eat lunch is in the takeout section of Manor on the first floor. They have a wide selection on pizzas, Panini and hot sandwiches that all cost less than 6 francs.
