What Students Say – Shopping

The following are quotes from students who were on program.

I prefer Coop over Migros because it has more of the options that we have at home. If you are looking for things that you can’t find in Migros or Coop, it is bound to be at Globus! Plus they give free samples which is awesome

-great in Carouge but also the Boulevard Georges- Favon has many cute bookstores

-best place for boots is Dosenbachs

-cheapest clothes and necessities go to H&M

I wouldn’t recommend buying clothes here, but as far as food, stick to migros, coop, and denner and you have your basics covered. Do buy chocolate, because its the best.

Visit the gift shop in the UN. Everything is tax-free and the selections are amazing

Food: Manor has the best produce for the price, Migros around the corner is ok, but Coop is probably the best compromise.

The H&M is inexpensive and has stylish clothes

For girls who need hair appliances – FUST is really close, has a big selection, and you can find cheap ones. I didn’t do much clothes shopping because it’s expensive around Geneva. Chocolate is the best souvenir you can buy :).

Migros or Denner for cheap groceries but I also found Coop to be more American and have better choices.  For clothes, the shops in Molard are mostly chain but may be most reasonable (H&M, Zara). Old Town has cuter, more unique boutiques hidden on the hills and streets. For souvenirs, the tents along the Lake have cheap deals for flags and knives.

Go to PlainPalais market for fresh veggies and fruit on Sunday! They also have a fun flee market there if you are into that sort of shopping.

Souvenirs are best at the little shops along the lake. Clothes are expensive in Geneva, but H&M or C&E are good places where you can find some deals. Also, there are two Vet’shop locations around. One is right by the college on your way to rue des Vollandes and is a quite small one, and the other is right across the tracks at the Plainpalais stop. These are thrift shops, but you can find some really good quality stuff there including good clothes for internships. Regarding food, I prefer Coop. They are more conscious in their products than Migros and definitely more than Denner. Denner is a good place to buy beer and wine, however Coop offers local beer and wine as well as spirits.

Don’t shop…go to France or wait until you visit Spain.

Shopping: For groceries, I mainly go to Migro and Coop. I have gone to Denner a few times for wine, but it is not much cheaper than the other stores, and I don’t like the quality of denner’s produce. I also like to go to Manor to get harder to find items! I have also gone to France twice for groceries, but after converting what I paid in Euros, I really didn’t notice a savings. For clothes, I bought some at H&M (which is a little pricier than in the US) and NafNaf which is a French store. Definitely go when they have sales!

Definitely liked Coop more than Migros, has much more selection. For clothes I just went in the stores on the Rue Bas, has so many good shops and always a nice walk
