International Program Intern, Tanzania, Channeling Men’s Positive Involvement in a National HIV/AIDS Response (CHAMPION)
The EngenderHealth CHAMPION project carries out an ecological approach to achieve individual and societal gender transformation to address the HIV epidemic. The project seeks to: a) encourage men to reflect on their personal values about gender and their impact on their own and loved ones’ health especially in terms of HIV; b) create supportive peers and families that nurture new gender-equitable behaviors; c) remove the barriers that deter men from using HIV and reproductive health clinical services; d) mobilize communities to tackle non-equitable social and gender norms; and e) catalyze societal change through advocacy to promote laws that decrease men’s and their partners’ risk for HIV and perpetuate gender inequity.
The CHAMPION project seeks applications from suitably-qualified candidates to fill the following position based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This position is for a six month’s contract and is open to international candidates only.
Scope of position: ␣ Assist in developing, designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluation social and
behavior change communication interventions. In particular, the selected candidate will assist with:
o Impact evaluation of CHAMPION’s implementation of its Group Education Manual, based on EngenderHealth’s Men as Partners training methodologies that promote gender equality to prevent HIV and improve reproductive health.o Process evaluation of CHAMPION’s curriculum for couples to improve the quality of their relationships and communication on issues related to sexual and reproductive health;
o Operational assessments to mount a multi-sectoral response to gender-based violence in Iringa, Mbeya and Dar es Salaam.
o The review and compilation of existing best practice community mobilization tools and guides for gender-based violence prevention.
␣ Write policy and technical briefs on any of the above research and evaluation results, as well as CHAMPION’s baseline assessment.
␣ Contribute to the documentation of best practices and success stories from CHAMPION’s implementation experience.
␣ Conduct literature searches related to gender, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, and social and behavior change communication.
Carry out other duties, as needed and assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
␣ A demonstrated commitment to positive social change as well as a personal and professional commitment to gender equity and positive health for all
␣ Progress toward a Masters or other advanced degree in a health-related field such as public health, demography, or development studies (courses in health communications, research, or HIV/RH a plus)
␣ Strong oral and written English communication skills; Kiswahili skills a plus ␣ Minimum of six months of experience with HIV and/or reproductive health in a
developing country setting or in the U.S. ␣ Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs and data analysis ␣ Strong organizational skills and attention to detail ␣ Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills ␣ Leadership, networking, and team work experience ␣ Professional experience with gender issues in reproductive health and HIV prevention
Remuneration:
The intern will receive a stipend of US $500 per month, paid in bi-weekly installments of $250 by EngenderHealth headquarters. EngenderHealth will not cover the cost of airfare to Tanzania, visa applications, vaccinations or other health-related expenses, or accommodations. All approved work-related expenses will be covered by the CHAMPION project. Interns who are required to travel for work purposes will be provided per diem and transportation, and lodging costs will be covered by the project.
