The Global Health Fellows Program II is pleased to announce its upcoming Summer 2014 internships with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington, DC.   

Work with the largest development agency in the world

USAID is home to a wide range of world-renown global health experts working on projects of international scope and importance. Here's your opportunity to contribute your skills to specific activities in one of the offices in USAID's Bureau for Global Health and other USAID bureaus. Internships will be based in several offices including the Office of the Assistant Administrator, Office of HIV/AIDS, Office of Population and Reproductive Health, and Office of Health, Infectious Diseases and Nutrition.

These compensated internships will not only provide you a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of global health, you'll be at the center of some of the most important and interesting work being done today. All internships require US citizenship or permanent resident status.

The role of the Secretariat is to manage and support the global partnership in order to facilitate the achievement of partnership goals and objectives, largely through coordination, fundraising and communications efforts

BACKGROUND

Together for Girls is a global public-private partnership dedicated to ending violence against children, with a focus on sexual violence against girls.

Launched at the Clinton Global Initiative, the partnership includes five UN agencies, (led by UNICEF with UNAIDS, UN Women, WHO an UNFPA); the U.S. government (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Violence Prevention [CDC/DVP], the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and its partners, USAID and the Department of State’s Office of Global Women’s Issues); and the private sector (Grupo ABC, BD [Becton, Dickinson and Company], the CDC Foundation and the Nduna Foundation).

THE TOGETHER FOR GIRLS STRATEGY

In partnership with national governments, civil society and the private sector, Together for Girls calls attention to the issue of violence against children and mobilizes support for country-driven efforts for change Collectively, our partners combine their unique strengths and expertise to ensure a coordinated and robust response. We enable the following practical and effective steps:

1.      National surveys and data to document the magnitude, nature and impact of physical, emotional and sexual violence against children to inform government leaders, civil society and donors.

2.      Evidence-based coordinated policy and program actions in countries to address issues identified through the surveys, including legal and policy reform improved services for children who have experienced violence, and prevention programmes.

3.    Global advocacy and public awareness efforts to draw attention to the problem and promote evidence-based solutions.

Together for Girls has a small Secretariat at the UAIDS office in Washington, D.C. The role of the Secretariat is to manage and support the global partnership in order to facilitate the achievement of partnership goals and objectives, largely through coordination, fundraising and communications efforts. The Secretariat does not have an in-country presence but rather works through our large implementing partner agencies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The program Advisor will be supervised by and report to the Director of Together for Girls, with the majority of tasks to be undertaken in collaboration with implementing partners at headquarters and in the field, other Secretariat staff, and primary stakeholder groups. Key responsibilities include:

Coordinate and support efforts related to country programs

·         Be fully familiar with country-level VACS data, national action plans (where they exist), country program teams, other key documents and processes, including fundraising documents, success stories etc.

·         Support implementing partner efforts to institute and roll out actions in response to VACS data:

1.    Organize and report on monthly operations meetings with partners;

2.    Monitor and report on progress, success stories etc;

3.    Support efforts for cross-country collaboration and South to South networks;

4.    In collaboration with partners, identify program gaps and develop solutions using consultative processes;

5.    Develop guidelines as needed;

6.    Participate with implementing partners on joint country visits as needed to provide support and technical assistance;

7.    Provide input into priority areas of work for the Partnership and identify technical and financial resources where needed/possible.

Oversee Secretariat work relative to the Violence Against Children Surveys and Results Framework

·         Working with Secretariat staff (Global Health Corps Fellow), maintain and track key aspects of VACS implementation and results-including core indicators, qualitative work, etc;

·         Support the implementation of a Results Framework at country level;

·         Identify and support the dissemination of critical findings.

Oversee reporting and financial management support for field programs and associated grants and partnerships

·         Working with Secretariat staff (Global Health Cops Fellow) and partners track grant financing and reporting for country-level work;

·         Identify opportunities for funding and, in some cases, prepare proposals for funding;

·         Coordinate development and tracking of annual work plans in the area of VACS and programs.

Provide overall technical leadership to the Secretariat and Partnership

·         Keep abreast of new advances and networks in the sector; identify and support opportunities for learning, dissemination and other research and program priorities;

·          Represent Together for Girls broadly and/or the Secretariat specifically at key meetings, especially technical ones;

·         Produce and/or review key partner and internal material for technical accuracy and relevance.

QUALIFICATIONS

 The ideal candidate will be a mid-level professional with:

A graduate degree in a field related to the work of Together for Girls. This includes social justice, child protection, social work, gender, human rights, public health or public policy;

At least five years of experience in program management in a relevant area of which a minimum of two were in a developing country context;

 Experience with UN agencies and/or bilateral donors a plus;

 Experience with partnerships a plus;

Strong knowledge of the sector and issues;

 Strong analytical skills with proven ability to translate data into programs;

Strong oral and written communication skills

 A relevant second language a plus;

 Strong computer skills including the full suite of Microsoft Office;

Proven ability to work effectively in complex environments;

Candidate must have the ability to work in the U.S. through citizenship or green card.

SALARY

Commensurate with experience; options for part-time employment are also available.

Country Relationship Managers in Kenya, Rwanda or Uganda – Assets to Adolescent Girls

Job description: 

DAI is preparing for an anticipated DFID and the Nike Foundation funded Programme; Assets to Adolescent Girls. The Programme will aim to address constraints to the economic empowerment of adolescent girls in developing countries. It will be based in Nairobi, Kenya and operate across Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Grantees of the Programme will receive financial and non-financial support to develop their products and business models.

Scope of Work:

We are seeking applications from highly experienced technical and managerial experts for the role of Country Relationship Manager based in Kenya, Rwanda or Uganda. This critical role will work directly with grantees and facilitate access to partners and technical assistance to identify, support and scale businesses that have products and services that benefit girls.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Overall responsibility for supporting an innovative portfolio of 6 businesses to refine and scale products that benefit girls at the country-level
  • Identify and encourage businesses and individuals with innovative and scalable product ideas to apply for the program support and grants
  • Co-ordinate the relationships between the grantees, mentors and technical assistance
  • Develop and manage the Girls Advisory Committee (to consist of 5 or 6 girls per country)
  • Support the development of local partnerships, providing information and forging relationships with local service providers, investors, and private sector businesses
  • Identify challenges for product and business growth and identify appropriate technical expertise
  • Negotiate the use of workspaces by grantees in innovation labs or hubs in country
  • Develop a database of pre-approved international and local technical assistance providers covering the following services – business development services, sector specific technical support, distribution and logistics support and girl safety support
  • Work with the Investor Relations Manager to source corporate sponsors to provide financial and non-financial contributions to grantees enterprises
  • Work with Communications and Knowledge Management Advisor to promote programme learning and sharing of achievements within country and between other programme target countries

Anticipated Project Start Date:  April 2014
Project Duration: Three to four years
Project Location: Nairobi, Kenya. Rwanda or Uganda, with occasional travel.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 6 years’ working at the cutting edge of development, product and business development, and/or social enterprise
  • Experience working with innovative social enterprises and SME’s to grow and scale
  • Understanding of human centered design (HCD), prototyping, business and financial modeling, investment and venture capital, distribution and marketing, and other elements critical to scaling successful products and businesses
  • Strong local network of private sector and business leaders, development experts, mentors, investors, development programs and NGOs, etc.
  • Experience working with woman and girls in the development world
  • Ability to identify challenges and match expertise to problems for solutions
  • Proven experience developing and managing networks of local and international organisations from the public, private and third sectors
  • Excellent communication skills, including strong presentation and facilitation skills
  • Fluency in English (both written and oral) and fluency the primary language of the country of work is essential,
  • Experience working in either Rwanda, Kenya or Uganda is essential

Education:
Advanced Degree in Economics, Finance or Business or other related field preferred
