Brigham and Women’s is seeking a Full-Time Research Assistant for Public Health Research in Family Planning

An investigator in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital seeks a full-time, benefits-eligible research assistant to support grant-funded public health research focused on abortion and contraception, and in particular on projects examining structural barriers to the receipt and provision of clinical care.

The research assistant will conduct face-to-face data collection, assist with data analysis, and ensure compliance with study protocols. This position has the potential to be highly collaborative and to support the intellectual growth of a candidate with a strong interest in social determinants of health, reproductive health and rights, and how these shape and are shaped by health systems.

At present, this position is funded for twelve months (October 2014 through September 2015).

Principal Duties:

  1. Serve as a liaison to multiple sites of data collection.
  2. Recruit study participants according to recruitment procedures outlined in study protocols.
  3. Obtain informed consent for research studies as outlined in study protocols.
  4. Maintain filing and administrative systems to ensure subject confidentiality and compliance with institutional research guidelines.
  5. Conduct on-site and telephone interviews (data collection) from subjects who enroll in research studies, as per study protocols.
  6. Create, enter data into, and maintain study database (no programming skills required).
  7. Meet regularly with Principal Investigator and research colleagues to report on study progress, and to receive oversight and mentorship.
  8. Complete additional tasks as outlined in individual research project description(s).
  9. Provide administrative support to Principal Investigator.
  10. Conduct reviews of the scientific literature on research topics as required.
  11. Assistance with basic data analysis as skills allow.

Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated interest in and/or experience in any of the following: abortion/reproductive health, community-based work with vulnerable women, epidemiology, occupational health psychology.
  2. Bachelor’s degree.
  3. Previous experience in research, and/or a research-related degree preferred.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:

  1. Excellent organizational skills.
  2. Ability to work independently and across multiple sites of data collection.
  3. Ability to communicate appropriately with research subjects.
  4. Professional demeanor and flexibility when conducting research in clinical settings.
  5. Basic computer skills required.
  6. Experience with database management and/or statistical software preferred.
