Summer Practicum Opportunity in Nicaragua. Spanish proficiency needed, apply by January 31st!

The Brookline Massachusetts/Quezalguaque  Sister City Project is recruiting two BU MPH students for a 6-8 week practicum in an agricultural town in western Nicaragua. Students chosen for this practicum will begin collaborating with project team members this spring, in preparation for the trip, departing in mid-May.

Brookline Sister City members will accompany students to Nicaragua to get acclimated and be oriented for the first week. Students then serve as a an integral part of the multidisciplinary Quezalguaque team, cooperating with local medical and political authorities on projects related to Chronic Kidney Disease, sexual health and more.

Interested students should apply by January 31st by submitting their resume and letter of interest to Peter Stringham MD, Kea van der Ziel MD, and Peter Moyer MD. Given the necessity for students to work closely with members of the community, high proficiency in Spanish is strongly encouraged.

Assistant Data Specialist

Global Oncology, Inc. (GO) is a non-profit started by two Harvard-trained physicians, whose objective is to achieve more equitable cancer care by creating and fueling active and dynamic partnerships between skilled professionals.

GO currently seeks a self-motivated, detail-oriented individual to assist the team with cleaning data for the Global cancer Project Map (GCPM) project. The data has been collected as an international effort to provide easy-to-access resources for public health workers and researchers. It is an attempt to foster collaboration between various organizations to deliver cancer care more effectively in resource poor settings.

This paid five-week internship, approximately 10-15 hours per week, will grant the successful candidate the opportunity to connect with well-established professionals and researchers working in the field of data science, medicine, and public health.

MADERA is a French non-profit organization, working in Afghanistan for 25 years for the rehabilitation and development of rural economies destroyed by war. Our programmes build the capacities of rural communities and support local initiatives.

MADERA is active in many fields of rural development in Afghanistan:

  • Community development and National Solidarity Programme: support to local development projects;
  • Natural resources management: rangeland rehabilitation, forestry
  • Agricultural production: research and extension, support to producers’ groups, arboriculture, vegetable growing;
  • Livestock: support to veterinary services, vaccinations, animal husbandry, extension;
  • Income generating activities;
  • Civil engineering: access to water, irrigation, construction and rehabilitation of infrastructures.

MADERA implements these activities in 4 provinces in Eastern Afghanistan (Laghman, Kunar, Nuristan and Nangarhar), 1 province in Central Afghanistan (Wardak) and 1 in Western Afghanistan (Ghor).

Coordinator, BUSPH “Spotlight” Series

The Practice Office of the Boston University School of Public Health is continuing its “Spotlight” series, a school-wide effort to focus attention on an issue of public health importance.  The Spotlight initiative is implemented over a two-year cycle, with a different public health topic introduced in each new cycle. The first Spotlight series, beginning in Fall 2012, focused on the many public health issues related to obesity.  “Spotlight on Obesity” identified several academic, research, and community engagement activities aimed at addressing this topic and highlighted the interactivity among the eight public health disciplines taught at the school.  The second Spotlight series, Spotlight on Mental Health, began its two-year cycle in Fall 2014.

Position description

The Spotlight Coordinator is involved in the planning and implementation of this project, and reports to the Assistant Dean for Public Health Practice.  The position is housed in the BUSPH Practice Office.  Job duties focus on program development, communications, coordination, and logistics.

Scope of work

  • Program development/implementation:

A group of subject matter experts has been identified and is convened periodically.  Based on input from this group, the Spotlight Coordinator is involved in identifying specific mental health topics from the perspective of public health and developing a schedule of activities to be conducted involving students, staff, faculty, and practice partners.  The Spotlight Coordinator takes a lead role in conducting the events and activities, with input and direction from Practice Office staff.

  • Communications:
    The Spotlight Coordinator writes and designs promotional materials, helps to update the Spotlight web page, and promotes the campaign through social media. He/she works closely with staff from the BUSPH Practice Office and Communications Office to ensure that the communication plan is consonant with the School’s communications policies, procedures, and strategy.
  • Project Coordination:
    The Spotlight Coordinator supports the project in coordinating campaign activities with key stakeholders, including subject-matter experts (at BUSPH and beyond), academic and administrative departments, nonprofit organizations, and other partners.  The Spotlight Coordinator is the lead organizer of the Student Spotlight Group, and helps ensure that students develop and promote at least one activity per semester.

Qualifications

The candidate must be a Boston University student enrolled at the BU School of Public Health.  The candidate must be a self-starter with excellent writing, research, and communications skills. Demonstrated experience with program management, communications, social media, and website development greatly desired. The ideal candidate will also possess a keen interest, knowledge, and passion for the topic of mental health.

Two well-known GH Faculty members are looking for a Research Assistant to engage in their new project!

Scope of work

We are looking for a student interested in participating in analyzing data on practice-based teaching and co-authoring a paper for a peer-reviewed journal.

The study will examine the comparative value of project-based learning versus more traditional teaching methods such as lecture, case study, or discussion-based teaching.. The study will explore how engaging with clients influences student learning, and also student perceptions of skill development and knowledge acquired using project-based learning. We will also explore the value of project-based learning as a preparation for future employment.

The student will assist with quantitative and qualitative analysis of course data generated from routine course evaluations and student e-portfolios.

Specific activities for analysis will entail:

  1. Compiling and organizing results of student evaluations from 2011 to the present.
  2. Conducting basic statistical analyses
  3. Writing up the results of quantitative analyses.
  4. Reviewing a sample of student e-portfolios generated from project-based learning to identify common themes related to study questions.
  5. Using qualitative analysis software such as Nvivo or Atlas TI to analyze data using grounded theory.
  6. Participate in the preparation of an oral presentation at a national educational conference in March 2015
  7. Co-author a paper for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

The successful research assistant must be familiar with common statistical analysis, and qualitative analysis software.

This project could be completed as a directed study or a CE. There is no financial compensation available.

Dr. Stephen Christiansen will be joining the Global Health Equity Program and the Opthalmology Interest Group to speak about his ophthalmology work overseas, with a focus on his clinics in Rwanda. Dr. Christiansen will discuss the need for proper eye care in underprivileged areas, and he will elaborate on the unique differences between care in developed and developing nations.  He will also discuss opportunities to get involved with opthalmology efforts.  We hope to see you there!
