Data Analyst Intern

An independent state agency, the Betsy Lehman Center is charged with fostering a statewide program of research, data analysis, and information-sharing that engages health care agencies, providers, and consumers in initiatives that will reduce medical error and enhance patient safety in the Commonwealth. The Center was re-established by Chapter 224 of the Acts of 2012, An Act Improving the Quality of Health Care and Reducing Costs through Increased Transparency, Efficiency and Innovation, and is supported by the state’s Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA).

The Betsy Lehman Center is seeking an experienced candidate for a 6-month, full-time analyst internship. The analyst will work with the Center’s research director and other personnel to analyze data pertaining to patient safety in Massachusetts. Applicants should be current students or recent graduates of quantitative-oriented degree programs with substantive prior experience working with data and the ability to clearly communicate results to diverse audiences. The successful analyst will communicate proactively, work both independently and collaboratively, have excellent attention to detail, and aspire for continuous learning and professional development.

This is a full-time, temporary position that will run approximately 6 months. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2016, though exact timing may be flexible. The internship will be based in the Center’s office at 501 Boylston Street, Boston MA.

Duties:

 Collect, construct, and analyze data pertaining to patient safety, such as reported adverse events and medical claims
 Utilize appropriate software (e.g., Excel and SAS) as needed to summarize data and perform more complex analyses
 Create clear and concise graphics, including charts and tables, to visually represent data and communicate inferences to diverse audiences
 Help develop and maintain systems to manage, organize, and track multiple datasets from various sources
 Ensure adherence to all state standards for secure use of data including documentation and storage
 Assist the Center’s Director of Research and Analysis with other tasks as necessary

Qualifications:

 Bachelor’s degree with quantitative focus (e.g., statistics, engineering/computer science, economics, and/or public health); may be currently pursuing
 Strong quantitative skills and conceptual understanding of research methods; substantive prior classroom and/or work experience conducting quantitative research is required
 Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel; substantive prior experience with a statistical package such as SAS, Stata, and/or other programming experience is strongly preferred
 Familiarity with health systems and clinical terminology preferred
 Proven attention to detail and self-organization
 Ability to work independently and collaboratively; proactive communication skills, commitment to meeting deadlines and effectively juggling multiple projects, and willingness to pitch in

Communications Intern

The Betsy Lehman Center is seeking a resourceful and professional intern to help the Center carryout its strategic communications efforts including tracking relevant media, developing newsletter and Web content, and supporting the Center’s public engagement efforts. The position will also include research, note-taking, and meeting attendance.

Duties:

Publications support

 Assist with production of the Center’s monthly e-newsletter including writing, editing, and layout

 Maintain current contact databases and listservs for external communications

 Research and draft content for the Center’s regular publications including newsletters, special reports, and annual reports

 Support the Senior Communications Manager to carry out the Center’s strategic communications plan

Media aggregation

 Conduct daily media scans for relevant news and literature; monitor local and national outlets

 Identify relevant resources to share with staff and draft summary “digests” for select content

 Develop efficient electronic filing systems for staff to easily access reports and articles for future use

Web content development

 Draft and input content for the Center’s planned new website
Other

 Take detailed notes at internal and external meetings

 Assist the Center’s leadership team to research issues and locate resources as needed

 Assist the Center’s Senior Communications Manager with other tasks as needed

Health Policy Analyst Intern

CHIA’s mission is to be the agency of record for Massachusetts health care information, to responsibly steward sensitive and confidential data, and to objectively report reliable and meaningful information about the quality, affordability, utilization, access, and outcomes of the Massachusetts health care system.

CHIA’s Health System Finance team is looking for a talented Health Policy Intern to join a dynamic team that is dedicated to monitoring health care delivery and financing systems in the Commonwealth by providing meaningful, accurate analytics. The primary role of the Health Policy Intern is to provide analytic support to projects related to health care financing in the Massachusetts health care system.

Specifically, the Health Policy Intern will:

Support data collection, quality assurance and analysis of payer-reported data, including total medical expenses, alternative payment methods and provider price variation
Support the production of CHIA’s Annual Report on the Performance of Massachusetts Health Care System
Prepare analytics, graphics and data books for the Annual Report
Prepare data notifications for payers and providers
Conduct research on payment methodologies and current development of ACOs
Conduct research on value-based services (i.e., cost vs. quality for a given episode of care or given service)
Conduct research on data sources for price/cost, quality, and utilization
Participate in meetings and/or other projects as interested

Preferred Qualifications

It is essential that the Health Policy Intern have working knowledge of the concepts of the health care system. In addition, the Health Policy Intern should be able to demonstrate:

Working knowledge of the Massachusetts health care system;
Ability to write scientific and technical papers;
Experience with data and/or policy analysis
Ability to conduct literature reviews on a variety of topics in health policy;
Ability to prepare and use charts, graphs, and tables to present analytical results;
Ability to work independently and effectively with other members of the unit;
Excellent written and oral communication skills;
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Access.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree with a major in public health, health services research, statistics, economics, or public policy.

 

Operational Planning and Data Curation Intern

The mission of the Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) is to monitor the Massachusetts health care system and to provide reliable information and meaningful analysis for those seeking to improve health care quality, affordability, access, and outcomes.

CHIA is seeking two summer interns to support MA APCD Information Technologies (IT) operational planning and data curation. Duties will include, but not limited to, attending CHIA operational meetings, writing and creating documentation to support CHIA operational processes, working directly with Information technology managers and directors, performing minimal health care data analysis, and learning about the Commonwealth’s health care resources and the use of those resources. Ideal interns should be deeply interested in large data operations, management of IT groups, health care data, and health policy.

Interns will work up to 37.5 hours week in downtown Boston. All interested candidates must submit a resume, cover letter detailing why they would like spend the summer working at CHIA and specifically why they’d like to work in CHIA’s IT group.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student to learn about state agency activities, to be engaged in a critical piece of the Commonwealth’s health care infrastructure, and to gain experience with operational planning in a dynamic IT environment.

Project Management Internship

The Project Management Internship is an exciting career building opportunity to work with Massachusetts Center for Health Information and Analysis. There are multiple in flight projects including implementation of a new website, building of an Enterprise Data Warehouse that will provide ample intellectual challenge to the successful candidate. We are looking for an energetic and enthusiastic candidate that wants to make a tangible impact on a critical component of the Commonwealth’s healthcare reform program.

Reporting to the Manager of the Project Management Office the IT Project Management Intern will:

Assist in creating and managing project delivery schedules for the various CHIA initiatives
Manage schedule containing the critical path for assigned CHIA projects
Manage risk, action items, issues, and dependencies for projects
Provide status reporting to management
Adhere to CHIA’s project development lifecycle
Create reports as required that allows ease of use and consumption.
Integrate project management best practices into daily activities

Qualifications (Minimum Entrance Requirements):

Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a professional environment
Project management experience and working knowledge of MS Office Suite
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

Quality Assurance Internship

The mission of the Center for Health Information and analysis is to monitor the Massachusetts health care system and to provide reliable information and meaningful analysis for those seeking to improve health care quality, affordability, access, and outcomes.

This position will assist technical staff in running quality assurance checks against data releases, and other processed data output. This may include output results from groupers (DxCG, ETG, DRG), and other data enhancement activities such as Master Data Management – Member, and Provider responsibilities. The analyst will be responsible for oversight of data requests – review, logging and tracking requests, and assisting in the extraction and delivery processes. S/he will develop a strong knowledge of APCD and other Health Care related data, and work with internal IT staff.

Detailed Duties:

Perform quality assurance for APCD Public Data Releases
Document Release Requests and monitor tracking status
Review release form requests to understand requirements and ensure the data provided meets those requirements
Assist in identifying data and file type anomalies; document and track as required to build history of corrections/cleansing needed. Provide reports, as requested, to assist management in determining corrective action
Assist with data and process documentation
Prepare summary reports in the formats as requested by IT managers
Assist unit staff in standardizing and enhancing the data and work with the team to implement the standardization and enhancement procedures

The Services and Strategies Team (SAS) Analyst Internship

The mission of the Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) is to monitor the Massachusetts health care system and to provide reliable information and meaningful analysis for those seeking to improve health care quality, affordability, access, and outcomes.

The Services and Strategies (SAS) Unit is responsible for CHIA’s strategy to support the legislature and other state agencies with CHIA’s information and analysis. We also help government agencies, researchers and others access and use the Massachusetts All-Payer Claims Database (MA APCD) and hospital discharge datasets.

The deadline to apply is April 20, 2016 with a salary range of $16 – $25 hourly.

The key duties of the Analyst in the SAS Unit include:

Assist in the review and tracking of applications to use the MA APCD and hospital databases and logging application information and investigator contact information into Salesforce

Reach out to current users of MA APCD and hospital data and document their progress.

Recommend follow up to CHIA Legal and/or SAS units as needed.
Work with Office of Communications to create a “gallery of success” for CHIA’s data assets

Participate in the development of presentations and data briefs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Proficient in using Salesforce or similar customer relationship management tools to organize contacts, communications, and other information
Proficient in using software such as Microsoft Excel and/or SAS to organize and analyze data
Ability to communicate about data and findings accurately and effectively
Demonstrated experience with and interest in researching, synthesizing and summarizing information on a variety of health policy topics
A team player who is detail-oriented, highly organized, and committed to ensuring data application files are complete and accurate
