 PHYSICIANS FOR HAITI: Summer Intern Position, Medical Education Logistics Intern

 Report to: James Hudspeth MD, Michelle Morse MD, Chris Curry MD PhD

 Description:

We work with several organizations in Haiti to help provide continuing medical education, to ‘train the trainers’ and to facilitate opportunities for healthcare workers to attend conferences and workshops on various medical topics. Physicians for Haiti is looking for an individual to help coordinate the logistics of our rapidly growing medical education work in Haiti. This will involve assistance with maintenance of databases of available professors who are available for teaching opportunities. The Intern will liaison and coordinate with a Haiti-based colleague to arrange logistics of travel, room and board for professors in Haiti.

 As our Haitian counterparts identify learning needs, we create online and problem based learning tools to facilitate continuing education and opportunities to create medical educators. The intern will assist in editing and formatting of problem-based learning cases as well as powerpoints and online learning tools. There will also be components of monitoring and evaluation of ongoing projects in Boston and Haiti that the intern will assist with.

 Skills Desired:

Attention to details, ability to work independently, quick uptake of new material and concepts, basic medical knowledge, dedication to improving medical educational opportunities in Haiti

 Preference will be given to applicants fluent in French or Haitian Creole or those with a background in global health or medicine. An ability to work independently is a must.

 PHYSICIANS FOR HAITI: Summer Intern Position, Outreach and Development Intern

 Report to: Wit Davis MPH, Manouchka Jacques

 Description:

Physicians for Haiti is a Boston-based organization that works with organizations in Haiti and the US to support medical education in Haiti. We are looking for an individual to work with our Outreach and Development Committee to identify and solicit philanthropic support from individual donors with interest in medical education in Haiti. This intern would coordinate closely with P4H partners to identify potential partners and donors who are integral to P4H’s work. This person will assist with grant writing and application submission.

 Physicians for Haiti also has local partners who are in need of support and coordination for ongoing activities, events, fundraising and awareness raising programming. This intern will help expand our fundamental connections to community groups and develop ongoing relationships.

 Skills desired:

Outgoing nature, comfort in multicultural and multilingual settings, grant writing experience, and a dedication to bolstering Physicians for Haiti’s capacity to work successfully with partner organizations.

 Preference will be given to applicants fluent in French or Haitian Creole or those with a background in global health or medicine. An ability to work independently is a must.

BUSPH Alumna, Etsuko Chida, from Japan, has had a long career in humanitarian relief since she graduated in 1991. Since 1996, she has worked for UNHCR in many countries. Prior to being evacuated after 9/11 in 2001, she was the only female worker for UNHCR in Kandahar Afghanistan, then under Taliban rule. She has also worked in Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya, Mozambique and Zambia. More recently she worked with efforts in Northern Japan in the aftermath of the Tsunami and Fukushima disaster. Etsuko will share about her life as a relief worker.

Jeff Waller has over 20 years of management leadership experience in international health. He has worked both for major NGO’s and Universities. Early in his career he was a hospital executive. He has lived in Thailand, Colombia and Grenada. His management responsibilities have included health programs in over 45 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.

IH 737 is offered from March 19th to May 7th. The purpose of this course is to begin and/or enhance the process of learning to work and interact successfully with individuals and groups in non-American cultures. Health care delivery and accessibility differ in various parts of the world; so do the quality, cost, management, and vision of health care. This course emphasizes the major influence of country or ethnic culture on organizational behavior and will present a selection of these topics: leadership, team building, organizational change, influence and power and motivation.

PROJECT: CHAMPION (Channeling Men’s Positive Involvement in a National HIV/AIDS Response)
REPORTS TO: Senior Technical Advisor - Gender, Policy & Advocacy

EngenderHealth works to improve the health and well-being of people in the poorest communities of the world. We do this by sharing our expertise in sexual and reproductive health and transforming the quality of health care. We promote gender equity, advocate for sound practices and policies, and inspire people to assert their rights to better, healthier lives. Working in partnership with local organizations, we adapt our work in response to local needs.

CHAMPION Project (Channeling Men’s Positive Involvement in a National HIV/AIDS Response) Project which seeks to increase positive male involvement in HIV and reproductive health, is funded by USAID and led by EngenderHealth. The project is implemented in ten regions throughout Tanzania, with the main office located in Dar es Salaam. CHAMPION invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill in the International Program Intern post based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This position is open to international candidates only.

Terms of Reference:
Assist in developing, designing, and implementing operational research for social and behavior change communication interventions. In particular, the selected candidate will assist with: o Operational assessments to mount a multi-sectoral response to gender-based violence in Iringa, Mbeya and Dar es Salaam; o Process evaluation of CHAMPION’s curriculum for couples to improve the quality of their relationships and communication on issues related to sexual and reproductive health.
Document and disseminate CHAMPION activities and outcomes, including but not limited to: o Writing policy and technical briefs on any of the above research and evaluation results, as well as CHAMPION’s baseline assessment; o Documenting best practices and success stories from CHAMPION’s implementation experience; o Compiling, editing or writing advocacy communication materials.
Assist in organizing and facilitating trainings on gender, gender analysis and GBV in relation to HIV programming for government, media and NGO partners.
Assist in facilitating MenEngage advocacy network meetings and learning events.
Conduct literature searches related to gender, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, and social and behavior change communication.
Carry out other duties, as needed and assigned.

Qualifications and skills required:
 A demonstrated commitment to positive social change as well as a personal and professional commitment to gender equity and positive health for all
 Progress toward a Masters or other advanced degree in a health-related field such as public health, demography, or development studies (courses in health communications, research, or HIV/RH a plus)
 Strong oral and written English communication skills; Kiswahili skills a plus
 Minimum of six months of experience with HIV and/or reproductive health in a developing country setting or in the U.S.
 Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs and data analysis
 Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
 Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
 Leadership, networking, and team work experience
 Professional experience with gender issues in reproductive health and HIV prevention

A stipend will be provided to the successful candidate.

Pardee Summer Fellowships Available!

 The Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future is accepting applications for the 2012 Pardee Graduate Summer Fellowships.

The 10-week program (June 4 -Aug. 10) provides a $5,000 stipend for research and writing on a topic related to the Pardee Center's interests, with the possibility of publication. All current BU graduate students are eligible.
