Project Design and Grant Writing Intern
Salary: Unpaid. Travel expenses reimbursed.
Length: 4 – 5 months with possibility of employment at the end of the internship
Start date: January 2014
Reporting to: Director of Large Grants / Development Manager
Place of work: Home-based for US interns; combination of home and office for UK interns
Work hours: Full time equivalent, flexible hours
Deadline: 8th December 2013. See application requirements below.
The Welbodi Partnership is a UK registered charity that has worked since 2008 to save the lives of children and mothers in Sierra Leone, which has some of the worst child and maternal health statistics in the world. The Welbodi Partnership promotes locally led and managed solutions that bring us closer to a future where quality paediatric and maternal healthcare are available to all.
The Welbodi Partnership is at an exciting juncture in our work, with plans to expand into new healthcare facilities next year while continuing to develop our successful current projects.
Job Specification:
We are looking for an intern to lead on our large grants program, which provides essential income for our current projects and new initiatives. The role would suit someone with professional writing or grant writing experience and an interest in international development or global health, or a recent graduate, masters or PhD student looking to work in this field. There will be scope to move into a paid position at the end of this internship, although this is not guaranteed.
Our institutional fundraising has been successful in the past, and we are looking to continue this trend. Our projects fit well with the criteria used by the major UK funders, and this role will be looking to capitalise on this past success and drive this area forward, allowing us to reach more children and mothers in Sierra Leone than ever before.
The Welbodi Partnership prides itself on being a small group of committed individuals who communicate and collaborate regularly. Team members have, collectively, decades of experience and expertise in international development, global health, and management. This position will be working within a small but ambitious UK-based fundraising team and will have regular contact with the Board of Directors and the Project Managers in Sierra Leone.
Main Responsibilities:
The intern’s primary responsibility will be the preparation of two large grant applications to major UK funders in early 2014. The intern will work closely with Welbodi Directors and Project Managers to develop detailed project plans, monitoring and evaluation indicators, and budgets, building off our existing programmes and grant proposals prepared in 2013. The intern will take the lead on drafting the proposals, with close and on-going input and support from Welbodi Directors and the UK-based fundraising team.
In addition and as time allows, the intern may also be involved in:
Researching Trusts and Foundations and compiling a list of applicable grants and grant cycles to produce a 12 month application planner
Assisting with grant reporting processes
Person Specification:
Essential:
Excellent writing skills and good verbal communicator; able to covey complex concepts clearly and coherently
Organised, meticulous and able to plan ahead and stick to set deadlines
An interest in international development demonstrated though previous employment or study
Fluent in English, both written and spoken
Able to work within a small organisation with limited budgets
Desirable
Interest in paediatrics and maternal health
Experience of project development and design
A background in trust and foundations fundraising, with knowledge and experience of the major UK institutional funders
Knowledge of current themes in international development including MDGs and post MDG thinking
Understanding of financial management and good working knowledge of project budgeting
Applications:
Applicants should submit a covering letter of no more than two pages, an up to date C.V., and a 2 page writing sample to Sebastian Wilson at Sebastian@welbodipartnership.org by 8th December 2013. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited to interview. We regret that non-shortlisted candidates will not be contacted, and should you not receive a response by the 10th of December, you have not been successful on this occasion. Interviews will be held in Central London or on Skype in the second week of December and the successful candidate will be notified soon after.

Student Coordinator
Group on Reproductive Health and Rights (GRHR)
The Group on Reproductive Health and Rights (GRHR) is seeking a master’s or doctoral student to serve as student coordinator. The position is part-time.
The GRHR is a Boston-based forum that provides a platform for the latest research, program, policy and advocacy work focused on sexual and reproductive health and rights. Members of the GRHR are active in the field of domestic and international sexual and reproductive health. The GRHR is governed by a steering committee (SC) comprised of individuals from the following institutions: Boston University School of Public Health, Columbia University , Harvard Law School, Harvard School of Public Health, Ibis Reproductive Health, Suffolk University and the University of Southern California. The GRHR hosts high-profile academic, policy and advocacy leaders in our field, and aims to provide a space to not only highlight important efforts and advances in domestic and international sexual and reproductive health and rights, but also provides the opportunity for group members to share ongoing work and ideas and get input from a range of research, policy and provider colleagues.
The main activity of the student coordinator will be to organize approximately 6 GRHR meetings over the course of the 2013-2014 academic year. The student coordinates the monthly communications regarding GRHR events, including date, location, and travel arrangements for the speakers and participants. The student coordinator is responsible for preparing the monthly meeting agenda, taking minutes, incorporating feedback from the SC and sharing them with GRHR for full review. Between monthly meetings, the student coordinator also manages the listserv and ensures that the GRHR document database is up to date. The GRHR will occasionally take on group projects or host or co-host events (e.g. books, editorials, conferences, and/or curriculum development); there are currently no specific projects or events planned for 2013-2014 but the group will continue to discuss possible group activities. On average, this position requires 10-15 hours per month.
The position is not funded. In the event that the group sponsors an event in the upcoming academic year, funding will be sought to compensate for additional time beyond the standard 10-15 hours per month.
To apply for this position, please send a cover letter and CV to Liz Henry, student coordinator, at ehenry@bu.edu by July 1st.
Global Impact Corps: Global Health Volunteer Abroad Experience
http://www.uniteforsight.org/volunteer-abroad
Impact: 1.6 million patients have received quality care by local eye doctors, including more than 66,000 sight-restoring surgeries since 2005.
Locations of Year-Round Programs: Ghana, Honduras, India
(volunteer for 7 days, 15 days, 20 days, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 10 weeks, or more)
Who participates? Students and professionals interested in public health, international development, medicine, or social entrepreneurship.
What do Global Impact Fellows say? "The nearly 3 months I spent with Unite For Sight in Ghana were among the most inspirational in my life. The Ghanaian doctors, nurses, and support staff are an incredibly devoted, knowledgeable, and gifted group of healthcare providers and health educators, and the Ghanaian people welcome visitors to their happy, happy homeland with open arms and bright, wide grins. The Unite For Sight model of pre-departure training combined with on-the-ground volunteer work cannot be beat for anyone interested in ethical global public health and healthcare delivery. What’s more, as a veterinarian (DVM, MPH), I am daily surprised to find myself benefiting from lessons I learned while volunteering with UFS: from cross-cultural interactions in my clinic, to improved health education, to sitting back and appreciating when things run on “GMT” (Ghana Mean Time). I cannot recommend this program more highly." --Bonnie Price, Global Impact Fellow. See more volunteer accounts at http://www.uniteforsight.org/volunteer-abroad/volunteer-accounts
What do Global Impact Fellows do? Global Impact Fellows support and learn from the partner clinics' talented medical professionals. Through hands-on, structured training, Global Impact Fellows gain a comprehensive understanding about best practices in global health and social entrepreneurship, and they receive a Certificate in Global Health & Program Delivery.
Global Impact Fellows come from very diverse backgrounds, including those interested in public health, medicine, international development, social entrepreneurship, and the social sciences. Global Impact Fellows work with local doctors to eliminate patient barriers to care for patients living in extreme poverty. They assist with patient education, visual acuity screening, patient intake, distributing the glasses and medication prescribed by the local eye doctors, and other important support tasks. They also have the opportunity to observe the surgeries provided by the local doctors. Additionally, Global Impact Fellows may participate in the Global Impact Lab, an optional program for those interested in pursuing global health research. For example, current Global Impact Fellows are pursuing research studies about medication management, the use of visual resources for patient education, traditional medicine practices, and patient barriers to care.
