VE Global: Volunteering with children in Santiago, Chile

VE Global, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing free volunteer and internship abroad opportunities in Santiago, Chile. VE Global is a volunteer program that helps foster the growth of children at social risk in Santiago, Chile by implementing literacy, arts, health, and English programs. Two BUSPH alumni have already participated with this group.

Uterine Balloon Tamponade Initiative

Division of Global Health & Human Rights (GHHR), MGH

The GHHR mission is to care for the world's most vulnerable by developing and facilitating health-care delivery, research, education, and capacity-building initiatives. GHHR is seeking a graduate student (continuing or recently graduated) to fulfill coordination responsibilities for a one-year term based in Kisumu, Kenya. The volunteer will be involved with managing an innovative, multi-site maternal health intervention. Opportunities will include data collection, progress reports, liaising with partner organizations, facilitating training sessions, and project development. Applicants should have strong analytical and organizational skills, a demonstrated ability to work independently, and strong interests in global health. Prior experience with research/management and time spent in a developing country is preferred.

Part-Time Development Intern with United for Health Abyssinia (UHA)

Part-Time Development Intern

United for Health Abyssinia (UHA) is a small non-profit organization committed to building the capacity of hospitals and communities in Ethiopia to fight tuberculosis. Partnering with regional hospital, we identify gaps in services, evaluate existing programs, conduct education, and organize communities to be active participants in their own health. UHA is seeking 3 part-time development interns to assist with website development, social media management, and fundraising. Interns will gain experience in business development in the non-profit industry. Deliverables will include the creation of an organizational “brand.” The Development Interns will have the opportunity to participate in strategic planning and organization meetings. They will also have the opportunity to participate in technical support meetings with larger organizations, such as Partners in Health.

We are looking for a team of people who will play a critical role in the growth and development of UHA.  We are therefore looking for creative individuals who can bring unique ideas to the fundraising strategies of the organization and have the follow-through to implement them. Interns will be working off site, so the ability to work independently while collaborating with a team is important. This is an opportunity for a small group of people to make a big impact for people in need.

Responsibilities:

●     Manage and expand online content, including organizational website, Twitter, Facebook, and online giving sites

●      Develop monthly newsletters with board members and key stakeholders

●     Draft letters of inquiries to potential donors and partners

●     Creation of fundraising strategy, including bringing and implementing new ideas.

●     Attend weekly meetings with development team.

●     Able to commit a minimum of 10 hours per week.

Qualifications:

●     Experience developing and managing a website

●     Experience fundraising, in any capacity

●     Proficient in social media

●     Strong writing skills

●     Knowledge of international health and/or development preferred

●     Some international experience preferred

What do Global Impact Fellows do?  Global Impact Fellows support and learn from the partner clinics' talented medical professionals. Through hands-on, structured training, Global Impact Fellows gain a comprehensive understanding about best practices in global health and social entrepreneurship, and they receive a Certificate in Global Health & Program Delivery.  

Global Impact Fellows come from very diverse backgrounds, including those interested in public health, medicine, international development, social entrepreneurship, and the social sciences.  Global Impact Fellows work with local doctors to eliminate patient barriers to care for patients living in extreme poverty.  They assist with patient education, visual acuity screening, patient intake, distributing the glasses and medication prescribed by the local eye doctors, and other important support tasks.  They also have the opportunity to observe the surgeries provided by the local doctors. Additionally, Global Impact Fellows may participate in the Global Impact Lab, an optional program for those interested in pursuing global health research. For example, current Global Impact Fellows are pursuing research studies about medication management, the use of visual resources for patient education, traditional medicine practices, and patient barriers to care.

Volunteer Program Manager (with stipend and flight) with Support for International Change in Tanzania

Volunteer Program Manager with Support for International Change

We are seeking a dynamic and organized individual to take leadership of Tanzania-based volunteer programs in rural villages. This is an eight-month position. The position is split between Arusha and Babati towns, Tanzania, East Africa.

Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the position are to:

  • Take overall responsibility for all Tanzania-based aspects of the development, planning, execution and evaluation of volunteer programs for International Volunteers and Tanzanians, including to
    • develop relationships with local leaders, teachers, and other nongovernmental organizations;
    • identify appropriate homestays;
    • organize a ten day orientation seminar;
    • manage transportation logistics;
    • recruit, select, train and manage talented Tanzanian teaching partners;
    • respond to health and safety concerns of volunteers;
    • facilitate community-based events;
    • compile program-related data for monitoring and evaluation.
  • Account appropriately for money used in the administration of the volunteer program, and follow budget guidelines.
  • Participate in development of annual budgets for volunteer programs.
  • Work to improve the quality of SIC volunteer programs – both in terms of the quality of the volunteer experience, and the quality of services provided to target communities.
  • Select, train, supervise and support volunteer program coordinators to facilitate the program.
  • Communicate regularly with other SIC staff, especially the Program Officer and the Field Officers in whose wards volunteer programs take place.
  • Contribute as appropriate to monthly and quarterly SIC reports and SIC's social media efforts
  • Maintain consistent communication by providing program updates and fielding any questions that arise.
  • Participate in strategic planning meetings both internal and external.
  • Write Program Reports for each volunteer program, based on volunteer evaluations and staff input.
  • Perform any other tasks designated by the Operations Manager, Programs Manager, and/or Tanzania Managing Director.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Experience living and working in a developing country and/or cross-cultural environment.
  • Swahili language skills preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills, and proven ability to multitask and to respond flexibly to changing situations.
  • Experience managing staff and/or volunteers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills especially in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Strong leadership, the ability to manage volunteer's expectations, and the ability to be tough when necessary.
  • Ability to live and work in areas with limited amenities
  • Driver's License, experience with four-wheel drive vehicles (manual transmission) preferred.

Terms: Preferably the applicant is available to begin work May 1, 2012. The position is compensated at a stipend level and resident permit costs are included. Round-trip international airfare included for those applying from outside Tanzania.

Volunteer to help conduct a community health needs assessment with  Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and their community health centers!

We need bi-lingual volunteers to help facilitate a survey in several underserved communities across Boston. 

We need volunteers who can speak:

Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean, Portuguese, Chinese, Spanish, and Vietnamese,

But if you speak another language and would like to be involved, we welcome your help.  We will begin fielding the survey in mid-February.  Flexible dates and times. All volunteers will need to attend a 1.5-2 hour training session at BIDMC before fielding the survey.

Current Student Volunteers Needed: Help Out with Spring 2013 Orientation!

Orientation for new students is Friday, January 11th, 2013. The Office of Student Services is looking for help on that day from continuing students.

 People are needed to sit at the information table and answer questions, to give tours and to network with new students. Help is also needed for setting up and breaking down. We will be looking for help on Friday from 8:00am-6:00pm.

MGH looking for a PT research interviewer

MGH is searching for a part-time research interviewer who lives in the Boston area for their project with adolescent mothers residing in teen living programs in the Boston metro and suburban areas (e.g., Dorcester, Roxbury, Somerville, Brockton, Newburyport). They are looking for someone who has flexibility in their schedules, can relate well to high-risk adolescent girls, very attentive to details and importantly, has research interviewing experience and a car. Most of the assessments take place on laptop computers so they are not looking for someone to do qualitative interviews, mainly quantitative and computerized tasks. Most of the interviews will be conducted in the late afternoon/early evening. This is a perfect position for a doctoral or master's student in psychology, public health, education, or related field.

Initiative to End Childhood Malnutrition

 The Initiative to End Childhood Malnutrition (IECM) is seeking one young professional to fill one of two program coordination positions for a six month to one year term at Nyakibale Hospital in southwest rural Uganda, beginning January 2013.  IECM is a collaboration between the Harvard College Global Hunger Initiative, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Karoli Lwanga Nyakibale Hospital.  The program was created in September 2009 to develop locally sustainable, effective, and replicable malnutrition protocols for developing, rural areas.  The position is a voluntary, unpaid internship designed to foster professional growth while fulfilling essential responsibilities in support of this nonprofit program.

In order to support this mission IECM interns will maintain a malnutrition program in Rukungiri, Uganda where an estimated 30% of children under 5 suffer from malnutrition.  As an intern you will gain valuable international experience by assisting in the development of a locally sustainable Inpatient Therapeutic Care program, implementation of a microfinance initiative to ensure financial sustainability, development of community gardens to provide nutritional education, and establishment of an Outpatient Therapeutic Care Program to target malnourished children who cannot be treated on an inpatient basis.  In addition to working on individual projects, interns will have a unique opportunity to gain practical exposure to the administration of a non-governmental organization.
