Description of New Content

Human and primate evolution, parts of the skulll
Goals

Student will be able to distinguish human skull from skull of ancestor and other species and be able to identify charterstic of closely related specicies versus distant relatives.
Materials Needed


Set of skull of various skull:
Australopithecus afarensis
Australopithecus africanus
Australopithecus boisei
Neanderthal
Homo Erectus
Homo sapiens
Chimpanzee
Gorilla

Procedure

 

 

 


Student will examine each of the skulls and observe/measure the following:
muzzle angles
position of the foramen magnum
prescence of a sagital crest
the shape of the dental arcade
number of teeth
the size of the canine teeth
cranial module
Definitions,  measuring techniques, and a chart to fill in are on this worksheet.
 
Evaluation

Worksheets will be collected.  As class, put the skulls in time order.  Ask the students to describe changes in skulls over time.
