Homework 15

San Fermin, the running of the bulls, is a seven-day long festival in Pamplona, Spain. Every morning at 8 a.m. people fill the streets to run alongside the bulls from the starting line, Corrales del Gas, into the bull arena, Plaza de Toros.

Figure 1: A map of the bull run course. The circular icons show where people were gored, injured, caught in a horn, or even died.

  1. An average bull has a mass of approximately 910 kg (this is equal to about one ton or 2000 pounds)! The mass of Mr. Doros is about 95 kg. A bull can run about 15 m/s. How fast would Mr. Doros have to run to have the same momentum as the bull?

  1. Some of the fastest football running backs and Olympic sprinters can run about 9 m/s. Is it realistic for Mr. Doros to run as fast as the speed you found for question 1?
