Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

Boston University faculty members are invited to apply for the faculty exchange program between BU and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). BU’s agreement with CASS provides for as many as two faculty exchanges per year. Each exchange is for a period of one month maximum, and two weeks minimum.

Full-time faculty members from the BU Charles River campus with particular interest in scholarly exchange with China are invited to apply. Priority will be given to applicants from the faculties of CAS, Questrom, and COM whose humanities and social science focused academic pursuits and research will benefit most from the resources available at CASS. Other inquires are welcome.

BU will cover the cost of round-trip transportation to Beijing—including reasonable standard round-trip airfare and associated ground transportation. CASS provides lodging (typically a modest hotel) plus a per diem allowance for meals. The accommodations are modest, and the allowance will not cover all the expenses of a one-month stay in Beijing. Costs associated with traveling companions will not be covered and are the responsibility of the scholar.

Applications are due to BU Study Abroad no later Friday, December 10, 20XX for travel to commence no earlier than mid-May 20XX.

An application must include:

  • A proposal (maximum of two pages) that describes a project(s) which:
    • Can be accomplished within the available time
    • Will benefit from the particular resources available at CASS
    • Will benefit from the opportunity to work with students and scholars at one or more of the various institutes that constitute the Academy. Applicants are strongly encouraged to identify specific individuals at the Academy with whom they intend to collaborate.
  • Details pertaining to other sources or potential sources of funding (travel grants etc.)
  • Proposed timetable/dates and an indication of flexibility regarding dates
  • A curriculum vitae of no more than four pages
  • A brief indication of Chinese and other relevant language ability

Emailed electronic submissions are preferred.

CASS can provide assistance in securing the services of a translator if needed, but the costs associated with such services are the responsibility of the scholar.

Selected faculty will be asked to submit a brief report summarizing the main aspects of their work at CASS to XXXX.

Notification of internal decisions regarding awards will be made no later than early February. These decisions are subject to approval by CASS, which will issue final decisions by February 15 or shortly thereafter.

Additional information about CASS can be found on the website of the CASS Bureau of International Cooperation (BIC).

The Chinese government also provides information about the CASS on their web portal.
