As Associate Director of Health, Safety and Security, Kevin Kugel coordinates Global Programs’ international health and safety strategy and serves as a resource for the BU community regarding health, safety, and security abroad. In collaboration with key stakeholders, he is responsible for the development, refinement, and implementation of policies, procedures, and activities associated with global travel preparedness and response, and is a key point of contact for BU’s International Travel Risk Policy.
Kevin served for more than 22 years in the Army as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense Officer retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2016. His military service includes various leadership and staff roles culminating in an assignment as the Chair and Professor of Military Science at Providence College. Kevin was appointed the Director of the Emergency Management Agency for Providence, RI upon leaving the Army. In 2020, Kevin joined CVS Health as the Senior Manager in charge of the company’s Emergency Operations Center.
Kevin holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the United States Military Academy and a Master of Science in Adult and Continuing Education from Kansas State University. In addition, Kevin is a graduate of both the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College and FEMA’s National Emergency Management Advanced Academy.
He is an International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) Certified Emergency Manager and is the Rhode Island Representative to the IAEM Region 1 Executive Board. He is also a Rhode Island Association of Emergency Managers (RIAEM) Advanced Emergency Manager and the Vice President of the association. Kevin deployed to Iraq three times during his military service, spending 15 months in Nineveh and two years in Baghdad. He is a foodie and believes the best way to experience a new culture is at the dinner table.
