Jan Haenraets is a Landscape Architect and specialist in historic preservation with professional experience and projects in Europe, America, North Africa and Asia. He is a practicing designer, researcher, and educator. His work ranges from creative design and environmental art to heritage management, cultural landscape advice and planning. His research interests and writings focus on international approaches toward historic landscape preservation, ecological sustainability and preservation of Twentieth century designed landscapes. At Boston University Jan teaches lecture courses and seminars at the undergraduate and graduate levels on preservation, landscape history and public history.

He has a wide interest in European and British landscape heritage and was the Head of Gardens and Designed Landscapes of the National Trust for Scotland. He holds a Ph.D. in Landscape Conservation from De Montfort University, UK and a M.A. in Conservation Studies (Historic Landscapes & Gardens) from the University of York, UK.

His scholarly work also focusesĀ on Asian landscape heritage and he previously was an Assistant Professor in South Korea. He is an expert in Mughal garden history and preservation, with a special focus on Kashmir, India. He was a Fellow in Garden and Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, Harvard University, Washington, DC, and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at MIT, with research onĀ the Kashmiri garden heritage. A subject he is currently developing into a book.

His design firm Atelier Anonymous, Vancouver, BC, blends heritage preservation, design, and environmental activism and has recent projects in North America, Europe, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Asia. To support, preserve and promote international landscape heritage and sustainability projects, such as heritage skills development, climate adaptation, and urban revitalization, he co-founded the Atelier-Anon Global Landscape Foundation. Dr. Haenraets is a member of the DOCOMOMO International Specialist Committee on Urbanism and Landscape and an advisor to the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Jammu and Kashmir Chapter. He co-authored cultural landscape management reports with the Olmsted Centre for Landscape Preservation, US National Park Service, Boston. He has lectured widely for international audiences and regularly contributes to publications.

In addition to being Professor of the Practice, Dr. Haenraets recently served as Acting Director for the Preservation Studies Program at Boston University.
