Stan Sclaroff named BU’s Dean of Arts & Sciences
On May 29th it was announced that Professor Stan Sclaroff, Computer Science, CAS was named as the permanent Dean of Arts & Sciences. Professor Sclaroff had been the interim dean of the college since last August 2018.
Stan joined the BU College of Arts & Sciences as a Professor in the Computer Science Department in 1995, where he later became department chair from 2007-2013. Additionally, he was the Associate Dean of the Faculty for Mathematical & Computational Sciences from 2015-2018 and founder of CAS’s Image and Video Computing Group. He also holds an affiliate appointment in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.
Stan’s work with the Artificial Intelligence Research (AIR) initiative at the Hariri Institute for Computing, a cross-disciplinary research initiative focused on machine learning of intelligence, includes his expertise in tracking, video-based analysis of human motion and gesture, deformable shape matching and recognition. In a recent article in BU Today his letter to the search committee was quoted, “to reimagine the ways in which disciplinary boundaries can be made more permeable, encouraging more collaboration between interdisciplinary units and traditional departments. CAS is a long-standing innovator and partner in interdisciplinary research and education.” It’s a sentiment shared by the Institute as it’s core belief.
