Muhammad Zaman Awarded Guggenheim Fellowship for His Work in Examining Antimicrobial Resistance

Hariri Institute Steering Committee member, Muhammad Zaman has been awarded a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. A Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Muhammad Zaman is known for his outstanding work examining antibiotic resistance in refugee settlements, including analysis of policy and access to quality medicines. He has used this experience to coinvent PharmaChk, which is a portable screening technology that identifies substandard drugs in developing countries. Below is a recent lecture by Professor Zaman entitled “The Quest for Ethical Solutions for the Global Refugee Crisis”

About the Fellowship

Founded in 1925 by Olga and Simon Guggenheim in memory of their son, the organization awards fellowships to professionals who have demonstrated exceptional ability by publishing a significant body of work in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and the creative arts, excluding the performing arts. Fellowships are awarded through two annual competitions: one open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada, and the other open to citizens and permanent residents of Latin America and the Caribbean.

About Professor Zaman

Professor Zaman’s research focuses on cell biology, mechanics, systems biology, and medicine. His lab utilizes computational and experimental tools rooted in cell biology, chemistry, mechanics, and imaging to ask how cells process external information and use it to develop specific responses in native-like 3D environments. His work also spotlights developing multi-scale models, integrating both first principle and data-driven approaches to quantify cell signaling, adhesion, and motion in 3D environments. Additionally, his secondary research centers on developing computational and experimental tools to improve the quality of life, education, and the practice of medicine in the developing world.

Professor Zaman is a Hariri Institute Steering Committee member appointed to assist the Director with overall strategic planning and management of the Institute’s operations.
