Emma Lejeune and Rabia Yazicigil Selected to Participate in the National Academy of Engineering’s 2024 The Grainger Foundation Frontiers of Engineering Symposium

Hariri Institute Faculty Affiliates Emma Lejeune, (ENG, ME) and Rabia Yazicigil (ENG, ECE, BME) have been selected for the National Academy of Engineering’s 2024 The Grainger Foundation Frontiers of Engineering Symposium.

The goal of the symposium is to bring together early-career engineers to facilitate collaboration and build connections between the next generation of engineering leaders. The symposium encourages the transfer of new techniques and approaches in engineering through featured themes and discussions between participants. This year’s cohort of 76 engineers come from diverse backgrounds spanning industry, government, and academia and were nominated by fellow engineers and organizations to participate in the symposium.

Emma Lejeune, Assistant Professor, College of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering)

Lejeune’s research area is in computational mechanics and computational biomechanics. She investigates biological and bio-inspired systems to inform medical protocols that are patient-specific. Lejeune’s current research integrates data-driven and physics-based computational models to predict the mechanical behavior of highly heterogeneous soft tissue.

Rabia Yazicigil, Assistant Professor, College of Engineering (Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering)

Yazicigil’s research focus is at the intersection of custom integrated circuits, signal processing, security, biosensing, and wireless communications. She applies this research to develop custom-integrated hardware that addresses energy-constrained applications.

The symposium, taking place from September 11th to 14th, features four main themes that participants will explore:

  • Water-Air-Surface Connections for Indoor Microbiology and Health
  • Building the Future of AI
  • Understanding and Engineering Connections Between the Gut and the Brain
  • The Impending Revolution of Digital Twin

In addition to talks, participants will engage in breakout sessions, poster sessions, and other events to promote discussions between members of the cohort. Frontiers of Engineering also hosts continuing alumni programs to support long-standing relationships between symposium participants.
