Talk Title: Bridging Academia and Civil Society: A Collaborative Approach to Public Interest Technology

Abstract: This talk explores the pivotal intersection of academia, civil society, law, policy, and computer science. It emphasizes the symbiotic relationship between these realms, recognizing academia as the source of knowledge innovation and civil society as the representation of diverse voices and experiences that act on that knowledge. The collaborative journey unfolds by delving into the multidisciplinary nature of Public Interest Technology, highlighting the need for shared goals and knowledge transfer to effectively address societal challenges.

Bio: Carolina Rossini is an internationally recognized expert in the field of technology policy and law, with over 25 years of experience, having worked in the private, non-profit, and academic sectors and as an advisor to various governments, policymakers, and international organizations. She is a member of the World Economic Forum Global Council on the Future of Technology Policy (mandate 2023 to 2025) and was a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (2016 to 2022), and she continues to be active in that community. She is the co-founder and currently serves as the Director of Partnerships and Research at the Datasphere Initiative.

She is the co-founder of and serves as a senior advisor to Portulans Institute, where she was the CEO for its 2 first years, and is a board member of InternetLab (Brazil), Derechos Digitales (Chile), #IamtheCode (Global), and Instituto EducaDigital (Brazil). She was a founding advisor to Global Partners Digital  (UK), The LightHouse Collective (USA), and the Open Knowledge Foundation (Brazil). 
She has worked for companies including Telefónica and Facebook and various non-profits, including as VP for International at Public Knowledge and Electronic Frontier Foundation, and Latian America Lead at the Wikimedia Foundation. She worked for Prof. Yochai Benkler as a 3-year fellow and Project Coordinator at the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University. As a consultant, she served clients including the OAS-Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression, the US State Department, Open Society Foundations, DAI, DUCO Experts, UNHCR, UNDP, Alliance for Affordable Internet, Freedom House, Ford Foundation, IDRC, and more.
She is a lawyer and seasoned public speaker who graduated from the University of São Paulo – JD/FADUSP, Brazil (2000). She has the following Master’s degrees: an MBA from Instituto de Empresa in Spain (2004), an MA in International Economic Relations from Santiago Dantas – UNICAMP/UNESP, Brazil (2005), and an LLM in Intellectual Property from Boston University, USA (2008). She has various certificate courses, including on Leadership from the Oxford Saïd  Business School, UK (2018) and Diversity and Leadership from Virginia University (2021). She is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and has lived in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, San Francisco, and DC. She is fluent in English, Spanish, and her native Portuguese.
