Professor Menegon Co-organizes Summer Program in Shanghai, China
From August 14 to August 22, 2016, Professor Eugenio Menegon was a co-organizer of the “Fourth International Summer Program in Chinese Religions” at Fudan University’s International Center for Studies of Chinese Civilization (复旦大学中华文明国际研究中心) in Shanghai, P.R. China. The Program’s topic this year was “Research Methodologies in the Study of Early Modern Chinese-Western Cultural Exchanges,” and featured lectures, group activities, and field trips coordinated by Professor Menegon together with Professors Nicolas Standaert (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium), Xiao Qinghe 肖清和 (Shanghai University), Li Tiangang 李天纲, Zhang Ke 章可, and Dong Shaoxin 董少新 (all at Fudan University).
Over forty Chinese doctoral students and junior professors attended the course, supported by full scholarships offered by the Center. Among the local religious sites visited as part of the Program were the Catholic Church of Songjiang 松江, first established in the 17th century, and whose current building dates to the 1870s (see picture); and the medieval Mosque of Songjiang (see pictures, including group picture of participants), both located within today’s Shanghai metropolitan area.
