Patrick Browne teaches courses related to the Civil War Era, Early American History, and the History of Boston. He also teaches for Boston University’s Writing Program.

Browne earned his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and his Ph.D. in History from Boston University. His dissertation focused on civilian relief workers during the Civil War and the network of aid provided to Union veterans during and after the war.

Before entering Boston University’s Ph.D. program, Browne worked in public history for nearly 20 years, primarily as Executive Director of a large historical society and, later, as Executive Director of a nationally accredited museum.

Browne has published papers the New England Quarterly and the Historical Journal of Massachusetts and authored two books on local history. As a Ph.D. candidate, he received the Boston University History Department’s Distinguished Teaching Award and an Andrew Mellon Research Fellowship from the Massachusetts Historical Society, among other honors.
