Error Message: Paper Misfeed
- Follow the prompts on the machine’s screen, which will indicate where you need to remove each sheet of paper.
- The screen will direct you to drawers and compartments on the front and/or right-hand side of the machine, then individual levers or locations within those compartments. Some levers may be harder to locate than others. You may need to look inside the machine or on the underside of a drawer. These locations will also each be indicated by a red light.
- Carefully remove each sheet of paper, making sure that the sheets do not tear and leave any pieces behind.
- If the screen has prompted you to release a sheet of paper inside the machine by flipping a lever, you must still flip the lever open and closed even if you do not need to do so in order to free the paper. The machine will not recognize that you have completed that step if you do not toggle the relevant lever.
- Keep following the screen’s prompts until the machine resumes printing.
- In order to reduce paper misfeeds, make sure that all of the paper you are attempting to send through the machine is flat and straightened out with no wrinkles or tears.

Error Message: Replace Toner Cartridge
- Check the color of toner that needs replacement either by reading the error message at the bottom left of the screen or by clicking Home > Check Status > Maintnc./Inquiry/Mach. Info.
- Flip open compartment _____.
- Remove the empty cartridge for the toner color that needs to be replaced and put it in the recycling bin.
- Locate the box for the new toner cartridge either in the copy room or the supply closet and open it up.
- Throw out the plastic packaging and silica gel packet.
- Shake the cartridge up and down several times.
- Remove the orange tab from the back of the cartridge.
- Slot the cartridge into place and close the compartment door.
- Please alert Cady (cady8590@bu.edu) or Jillian (jilliann@bu.edu) so that they know to order a new cartridge in that color before it next needs replacement.

Error Message: Replace Waste Toner Bottle
Open the door for compartment _______.
- Slowly remove the waste toner bottle from the bottom of the compartment.
- The bottle should be about half full of waste toner.
- Carefully tip the bottle forward towards the part of the bottle that had been facing the compartment door.
- Look at the rear end of the waste toner bottle. This is the part of the bottle that had been the furthest into the machine.
- There is a small black plastic lever at the rear of the bottle. As the bottle fills with waste toner, the lever is pushed further out and in front of a sensor at the back of the compartment. This alerts that machine that the waste toner bottle is full and it will cease printing until the waste toner bottle is replaced.
- Now that you have tipped the waste toner into the front of the bottle, gently push the lever back into place. The difference should only be a matter of a few millimeters.
- Slowly tip the bottle back to level and insert it back into its compartment.
- This tricks the machine into thinking that the waste toner bottle has been replaced and it will resume printing.
- Repeat these steps (always slowly and carefully) for as many times as is necessary for the machine to resume printing.
- The waste toner bottle still needs to be replaced. Immediately contact Cady (cady8590@bu.edu) or Jillian (jilliann@bu.edu) to alert them. They will make a service request with Ricoh to have the bottle replaced and the old bottle disposed of.
In order to better visualize the location and shape of the bottle, see the following video. Don’t worry about actually replacing the bottle. All you need to do is convince the machine to keep working with its old bottle for the handful of days it may take Ricoh to stop in to replace it and properly dispose of the old bottle.
Error Message: Refill Staples
Open the door for compartment _____.
- Pull out the green staples cartridge, which should be in the center of the compartment. This entire cartridge can be removed from the machine and will look like the photo at the right.
- Locate the box of Ricoh Type V Staples from the supply closet and remove a pack of refill staples. This is the only kind of staples that works with our machine.
- From the staples cartridge, remove the old pack of staples, which should at this point just be an empty clear plastic box and throw it away. Do not throw out the entire staples cartridge, just this empty clear plastic box.
- Insert the refill pack of staples in its place, stick the staples cartridge back into its slot in the machine, and close the compartment door.
- If you notice that there are only a couple refill staples packs left, please alert Cady (cady8590@bu.edu) or Jillian (jilliann@bu.edu) so that they know to order a new box.
In order to better visualize the process, take a look at the following video. The video is otherwise about fixing paper misfeeds, but the video should start with its discussion of the staples compartment.
