When you check in, resident students sign for their keys to your residence. And when it comes to those keys, here are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Always make sure to lock your room when you leave and take your key.
  • If your key is lost or stolen, immediately report it to your residence office, your resident assistant, or the resident assistant on call. Same thing if you’re locked out of your room or apartment. The RA or staff assistant will explain the lock-out procedure, and may provide you with a temporary key to be used for access to your room. If a temporary key is provided, please note that you will be charged for a lock change if you do not return the temporary key within 24 hours.
  • Carry your keys and Terrier Card on different key rings or holders.
  • Unauthorized possession, duplication, or use of keys that permit access to University facilities, including residences, is prohibited.

When you move out of a residence, no matter the time of year, you are responsible for turning in your keys to your residence office. To avoid additional room, board, and lock/key charges, return your keys in person and ask for a key receipt. Don’t rely on another resident or resident assistant to return your keys for you.

Residence office hours are 9 am to 5 pm on weekdays and 7 pm to midnight each day.
