I-9 Process

Please note: in order to maintain BU account access the I-9 must be completed within 3 days of your start date. Once the completed I-9 has been submitted to BU HR, they will be processed on a first come-first served basis. You will be notified via email once your I-9 has been processed.
This process should only be used by US citizens or permanent residents. Any other citizenship status must contact ISSO.

A complete I-9 document MUST include:

    1. Section 1 of the I-9 – completed by yourself/the employee.
    2. Section 2 of the I-9 – completed by an Authorized Representative of your choosing. Your Authorized Representative can be a friend, family member, coworker, or notary acting on behalf of Boston University. If you use a notary, they should not provide a notary seal on your Form I-9.
    3. Copies of the FRONT AND BACK of the identification used to complete Section 2 (must be readable).

    Detailed Directions:

    1. Access the Form I-9 on the USCIS website
    2. Fill out Section 1 on your own. Please note the form linked above is fillable, and can be filled out online (then printed), or printed and filled out by hand. If a preparer and/or translator assisted you in completing Section 1, that person MUST complete the Preparer and/or Translator Certification on page 3 (Supplement A).
    3. Sign and date Section 1, using today’s date (do not backdate).
    4. Someone other than yourself must complete Section 2. They will review a document from List A or a combination of documents from lists B and C to verify your identity and authorization to be employed in the United States. The list of acceptable documents can be found on page 2 of the Form I-9 or the USCIS website.
    5. Your Authorized Representative must sign and date Section 2, and they should list “Authorized Representative” as their title, “Boston University” as the Organization Name, and 25 Buick Street as the business address (Boston, MA 02215).
    6. You must make a copy of the front AND back of the identification used in Section 2. The copy must be included when the completed Form I-9 is submitted so HR can review it.

The completed Form I-9 can be submitted in one of three ways:

    1. Secure Email (choose the “New to SecureContact” option). This link pre-fills the recipient email address (onboard@bu.edu).
    2. Fax to 888-975-1568. This is a secure fax line only used for I-9 submissions.
