How to Obtain Benefits and Appeal a Denied Claim
To claim benefits from the Boston University Short-Term Disability Benefits Plan, you should contact Human Resources as soon as your total disability begins. The University will assist you in your application.
Processing STD Claims
To process your claim, the University may require you to be examined by a physician chosen by the University, at its own expense, from time to time. If you refuse, your benefit payments may be disapproved or discontinued.
Notice and proof of claim should be made promptly. Once the University receives your application for benefits and supporting documentation, your benefits will be paid promptly (as long as it is a valid claim).
If your claim is denied, the University shall, within a reasonable period of time (not exceeding 90 days), provide you with a written denial. It will include specific reasons for the denial, and the provisions of the Short-Term Disability Benefits Plan on which the denial is based. It will also explain how to apply for a review of the denied claim.
Appealing a Denied STD Claim
The University is solely responsible for determining what constitutes a covered claim under this plan. If the University denies your claim for benefits, in whole or in part, you have the right to appeal the denial. Consult Human Resources for information about the procedure to appeal a denial.
Additional information on how to appeal a denial of benefits is included in the Administrative Information section of the Faculty and Staff Benefits Handbook.
