Organizational Culture and Climate Study

All employee anonymous survey that provides data on the current culture within an organization as well as the culture would be ideal for higher levels of engagement and optimizing performance. The exercise measures the gaps between the current and the ideal. The data produced from the exercise can be leveraged to provide insight and action plans oriented at closing the gaps. Through 360 assessments, leadership’s and managements impact on the culture is then analyzed (as a team and individually) and action plans are created. Best practice is to re-measure in 18 months to analyze progress and further opportunities for organizational change and effectiveness.

Tools:

  • OCI – The Organizational Culture Inventory® (OCI®) is the most widely used and thoroughly researched tool for measuring organizational culture in the world. The OCI provides an assessment of the operating culture in terms of the behaviors that members believe are required to “fit in and meet expectations” within their organization. Four of the behavioral norms measured by the OCI are Constructive and facilitate problem solving and decision making, teamwork, productivity, and long-term effectiveness. Eight of the behavioral norms are Defensive and detract from effective performance. A special form of the OCI— the OCI Ideal—can be used to define the culture that will maximize performance and long-term effectiveness. The OCI can be used to:
    • Obtain reliable data on the behavioral norms of the organization and/or its sub-units
    • Validate a need for cultural change on the part of participants
    • Identify the areas where change needs to take place
    • Develop a vision for culture change
    • Create individual and organizational action plans for effecting cultural change
    • Evaluate the impact of organizational change efforts
  • LI/MI – 360 assessments that measure the impact of leaders and managers on organizational culture as a team and individually.

Time Commitment – 20 minutes for each OCI survey (Current and Ideal), workshops with Leadership, Staff and Faculty could be done in a series of sessions that would include review of the current state and ideal state, gap analysis and action planning. Survey could be done again in 18 months to check on status and progress and keep the culture moving forward.
