Staff Example

Here’s an example to illustrate how these benefits work.

Sarah is a full time Exempt Staff Member, who has been working at BU for 10 years and has accrued the maximum amount of Sick Time: 26 weeks.

Sarah gives birth to a child, qualifying her for both personal medical leave and family leave.

Because the maximum leave duration per a 12-month period is 26 weeks, Sarah can take a personal medical leave for up to 14 weeks, if certified by her medical provider, then take an additional 12-weeks of bonding leave.  During the 14 weeks of personal medical leave, she receives 100% of her weekly base pay through a combination of Family and Medical leave and, because she has chosen to use it, Accrued sick time.

Sarah is also eligible for parental leave to bond with her new child. Sarah uses this family leave following her personal medical leave, and receives another 12 weeks at 80% of pay. However, she chooses not to use Sick Time to supplement this portion of her leave.

In total, Sarah receives full pay for 20 weeks of leave through the combination of Family and Medical Leave benefits and Accrued Sick Time.
