Compensation Evaluation Process
Compensation provides evaluations for position descriptions and pay administration.
Request an Evaluation
Complete the Position Evaluation Request Form or Salary Increase Request Form. Submissions must be made by the manager or HR liaison, whichever is consistent with your internal department process.
The turnaround time for an evaluation can be as long as 10 business days. Please plan accordingly. We will do our best to accommodate any unusual urgencies you have.
Factors Involved in a Position Evaluation
When evaluating a position, Compensation considers the following factors:
- The language used to describe the responsibilities of the position, and at what level the language places the position based on FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) standards and the characteristics of the career levels in the University compensation structure
- The order of importance of the essential functions – they should be listed from most important to least important, regardless of percentage of each
- How the position compares with similar positions, both in the department or school and across the University, including:
- Position language and responsibilities
- Position requirements
- Proposed job title
- The department’s organizational structure, including which positions within the department or school function at a higher or lower level
- Internal equity in the department and with regard to others mapped to the same job across the University
- Market data, when available and applicable
Factors Involved in a Salary Increase Request
Compensation considers the following factors when evaluating a salary increase request:
- Internal equity in the department and with regard to others mapped to the same job across the University
- Market data, when available and applicable
- Employee’s relevant experience (both within and outside of BU) and length of service at BU
