I-9 Process and Temporary Employees

Based on the requirements of the Immigration and Reform and Control Act of 1986, all new employees of Boston University must complete a Form I-9 within their first three days of employment. Employees who do not complete a Form I-9 within their first three days of work will not be able to continue working at the University until a Form I-9 has been completed.

Form I-9 instructions will be sent to the new employee’s personal email prior to their start date. If a new employee prefers to complete their Form I-9 in person at the Human Resources office, no appointment is necessary. Original copies of the required documentation must be provided. A list of acceptable documentation will be included in the instructions. More information on acceptable documents can also be found on the USCIS Website.

Boston University employees who are not U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents must verify their employment eligibility via an in-person appointment with the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO). Hiring units should encourage new employees to schedule their New Employee I-9 Employment Verification appointment before their third day of employment. Employment eligibility and required documentation varies and, in cases where BU sponsorship is needed in order for the employment to commence, significant advance planning will be needed. Please consult with ISSO Scholar/Employee Services and/or review our sponsorship guidelines and procedures if you have any questions.
