Independent Contractors

Independent Contractors are not considered employees of the University, are not eligible for benefits, and are not paid through Boston University payroll.

Before engaging an individual (or a company with only one employee) to do work for the University as an Independent Contractor, consultant, freelancer, or vendor, you must evaluate whether he or she should be classified as an Employee or Independent Contractor. Temporary labor can be ordered using the University’s TerrierTemps Staffing program. Consulting Services from an Independent Contractor are paid through a shopping cart in SAP. For more information about engaging consulting services, please visit Sourcing & Procurement’s Business Consulting page.

For guidelines on determining eligibility for the Independent Contractor classification, please visit the Accounts Payable External Service Provider Guidelines policy page.
