$5000 BU Hub Course Development Stipends

In 2024, the BU Hub will launch a new signature series of interdisciplinary courses. These courses will realize the integrated, interdisciplinary vision of the Hub. They will bridge schools and colleges and be designed at the introductory or intermediate level to be accessible to undergraduates across BU. They will introduce students to new fields of study, provide unique Hub unit combinations through their interdisciplinary range, and connect students and faculty from diverse academic backgrounds and specialties.

Course development stipends of $5000 will be granted to faculty to develop these new courses. For selected proposals, the faculty member(s) will be required to attend a planning meeting and complete a proposal timeline. Hub and Center for Teaching & Learning staff will also be available to assist throughout the development process.

Faculty interested in developing a course should submit this simple proposal form to the associate provost for undergraduate affairs at apunderg@bu.edu.

Stipend Eligibility:

All faculty are eligible for stipends. Faculty must commit to teaching the course at least two times in the next four years. When faculty participate as part of a team, the stipend will be split among team members.

Proposals:

Faculty are encouraged to share their proposed course with their department chair or program director and discuss how the course might contribute to departmental majors and minors as well as to the general education program. Proposal forms must be reviewed and signed by the faculty member’s department chair or program director.

Proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Once the course has been submitted through the Hub course approval process to the University Council General Education Committee (GEC), payment of the stipend will be authorized. The stipend is not contingent upon a course’s acceptance into the Hub; however, when necessary, it is expected that faculty will revise and resubmit their course proposal to the GEC until it is approved.
