Emily Ghosh, a 2024 Graduate Student Summer Fellow at the Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS), is a PhD Candidate in the Materials Science & Engineering Division. She holds a BA in Physics and an MS in Materials Science and Engineering. She has worked in various fields including renewable energy technologies, aerospace, and science education. In addition to her research, Emily is currently also the President of BU’s Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Student Association and the Secretary (rising Vice Chair) of the American Society of Materials Boston Chapter. Through her work she hopes to support the development of equitable energy and education resources for the community.
As an IGS Graduate Student Summer Fellow, she is conducting research on the electrochemistry and microstructure of solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) in the context of clean hydrogen production. Her work focuses on increasing the longevity of SOECs while investigating the requirements of implementing SOECs into grid-scale energy infrastructure to further minimize environmental impact from energy consumption. Her faculty advisor is Soumendra Basu, Professor (Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering) and Associate Division Head (Materials Science and Engineering), and her project title is “GDC-Infiltrated Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells for Hydrogen Production and Grid-Scale Energy Storage.”
