richard-maloneyRichard Maloney

Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of Arts Administration

Dr. Richard Maloney is an Assistant Professor and Director ad interim of the Arts Administration graduate program at Boston University where he teaches courses in performing arts management, fundraising, and comparative cultural policy. He is also a professional musician (lute and guitar) and a former arts administrator (Boston Early Music Festival and the Boston Camerata).

His scholarship examines why and how small and midsize municipalities pursue cultural economic development as an urban regeneration strategy.  His most recent work explores how policy networks — consisting of local cultural, business, government, education, and community leaders — form and develop and the impact these networks have on the implementation of local cultural economic development policies.

Previously, Dr. Maloney worked as a Research Associate at the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy at Northeastern University.  His research has been published by the Brookings Institution and the ENCATC Journal of Cultural Management and Policy.  He serves on the board of directors of Mass Creative and is a member of the editorial board of the Irish Journal of Cultural Policy and Administration.

With a grant from the Initiative, Maloney seeks to explore how local “policy networks” form in the Massachusetts communities of Gloucester and Pittsfield, and if they impact the development and implementation of local cultural economic development policies.
