BU Sponsorship of Employment-Based U.S. Permanent Residence (Green Card)

When an employer agrees to sponsor a foreign national employee for an application for US permanent residence, the employer is responsible for submitting the application on behalf of the employee to several different federal agencies. The process requires a substantial commitment of University resources the requesting department needs to verify that there is a compelling institutional need and reasonable expectation of continued employment. For these reasons, BU maintains a strict approval process.

While the ISSO is not directly involved in the request to the Provost or the overall application process, we will continue to provide immigration guidance and processing related to non-immigrant-based travel and employment authorization. Applications for Lawful US Permanent Residence can take several years so it is imperative that employees keep the ISSO abreast of any updates or developments related to this separate application process. Host departments and employees will continue to submit immigration sponsorship requests to the ISSO, as needed, to insure that the employee can maintain his or her employment at BU until US Citizenship and Immigration Services approves the final adjustment from a non-immigrant to that of a lawful US permanent resident. The ISSO will consult with the outside legal counsel as needed throughout the process.
