Elective Session Descriptions

Introduction to the BU Classroom:
How will academic life at BU differ from your past academic experiences? What does it mean to participate in class? How should you be studying at BU? In this session, we’ll provide answers to these questions and cover other transitional areas such as time management, BU’s academic conduct code, and technology usage in the BU classroom. Join us to explore the exciting, new learning opportunities that you’ll have in the BU classroom! This session is designed for students who are new to the U.S. university classroom.

You’re Hired! On-Campus Employment for International Students:

Learn how to find and apply for on-campus jobs, what to expect in the workplace, and what you need to know about applying for a Social Security number, completing your I-9 and filing tax forms. This session is intended for F-1 students in a degree program only. Short-term students and exchange students are not eligible for on-campus employment.

Making Campus Connections:

How do you make connections on campus? Learn about the residential experience, student activities, and key campus resources. This session is designed for all new students – including those new to the U.S. university campus and those transferring to Boston University.

Student/Faculty Interactions:

This workshop is designed for all students who are interested in how to have effective interactions with faculty and teaching assistants (TAs) both in and out of class. Interactions are often less formal in the US but there are nonetheless more and less appropriate ways of interacting and boundaries that students need to be aware of. This session is designed for all new students – including those new to the U.S. classroom and those transferring to Boston University.

Your Health at Boston University:

Staff from Student Health Services (SHS) will discuss how to stay healthy during your time at Boston University. We will provide an overview of medical and mental health services available to BU students, and will answer common questions about topics such as health insurance and immunizations. This session is designed for all new students – including those new to the U.S. university campus and those transferring to Boston University.
