MA in European Jewish History (LBI London)
An opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students to pursue a masters degree in European Jewish History from the Leo Baeck Institute at the School of History at Queen Mary:
“The School of History at Queen Mary is a centre for excellence in the teaching of History and in historical research. Its members are known for their intellectual leadership and for the innovative, collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches they foster. The Leo Baeck Institute for the study of the history and culture of German speaking Jewry (LBI) is associated with the School. Its MA in European Jewish History is the only taught postgraduate programme in the UK devoted to the rich field of European Jewish history, from England to Poland, from Germany and the Netherlands to Russia, France and the USA.
Students on our MA thus benefit both from a general formation in the methods of History appropriate at postgraduate level, and from the specialist expertise of teachers in the areas of Jewish history, history of the Holocaust, the history of anti-Semitism and more.
Our MA students work within the leading research institute in the field of German-Jewish history and culture, in the heart of what was the Jewish East End of London. They also benefit from the Leo Baeck Institute’s international network for research in European Jewish History with partners in New York andJerusalem. As we are part of a dynamic Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences within the University of London, our students have access to all academic libraries and a wealth of archives in the capital. The LBI’s strong contacts with the Wiener Library create access to the world’s leading archive of the Holocaust. Study of Jewish history is conducted within a broad intellectual context, one which sees Jews as vital part of European history, and Jewish history as an essential part of the study of global modernity.
The unique partnership between the Leo Baeck Institute and the School ofHistory at Queen Mary University of London offers a distinctive and well-supported MA in European Jewish History. Many of our graduates have gone on to excellent doctoral work. Our MA and PhD students benefit from several international research exchanges as well as from access to a wide range of events organised by LBI and the School of History, including from research conferences, seminars, film-screenings and commemorative events.
The MA is a one-year, full-time programme and fees for overseas students in 2013-14 were £13,000. The LBI is able to offer two competitive grants, which cover a substantial part of these fees.
