Jeffrey Hughes

Professor of Astronomy

W. Jeffrey Hughes is Professor of Astronomy at Boston University. A native of Wales, he received both his BSc and PhD in physics from Imperial College, London. He spent two years as a Hayes-Fulbright Scholar doing post-doctoral research in the US, spending a year at both the University of Colorado and UCLA. He joined the Boston University faculty in 1978, where he was the founding director of the Center for Space Physics. He has served as Astronomy Department chairman, and is currently director of the Center for Integrated Space Weather Modeling (CISM), an NSF Science and Technology Center. Hughes’ research focuses on the dynamics of the Earth’s magnetosphere and its interactions with the solar wind and the ionosphere.
