BU Trustee Vice Chair
Ryan Roth Gallo graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in 1992, earned a BA in classical studies from Stanford University in 1996, and her JD magna cum laude from Boston University School of Law in 1999. She went on to serve as a member of the litigation practice group at Paul Hastings. She left the firm in 2003 to pursue a solo practice that is now predominantly pro bono and focused on assisting non-profits in the education, art, and social services sectors. Recent legal work has focused on assisting a nonprofit, residential rehabilitation program that provides holistic healing for young women and girls who have been victims of sex trafficking. Ms. Gallo is also an artist working primarily in acrylic, oil, and mixed-media collage on canvas, but in other visual media as well. She is also the lead singer in a local rock band, in which her son, Ernest, plays the drums.
Ms. Gallo was named as a Boston University trustee in September 2015, and currently serves as a vice chair. Formerly, she served as chair of the Boston University Advisory Board from September 2013. She is active in numerous roles at the University, including as a member of the LAW Dean’s Advisory Board, the International Advisory Board, the Innovate External Advisory Board, and the Northern California Regional Leadership Council.
Outside of BU, Ms. Gallo is a trustee of the Gallo Center for the Arts, a member of the Art Restores Kids steering committee for the Stanislaus Family Justice Center, and an advisory board member for the Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center. Previously, she served on the board of the Education Foundation of Stanislaus County.
She is married to Ernest J. Gallo, president and CEO of E.&J. Gallo Winery, Inc., the world’s largest private winery, based in Modesto, CA. He formerly served as chief operating officer. The couple has two children, Gloria and Ernest.
In 2021, Ms. Gallo and her husband funded the Ryan Roth Gallo and Ernest J. Gallo Professorship of Law. It supports a faculty member whose research focuses on critical race theory. The inaugural holder of the chair is the Law School’s Dean, Angela Onwuachi-Willig.
