“I’m Still Here” and Echoes of the Dictatorship (02.26.25)
Join us on Wednesday, February 26, at 4:30 PM for a discussion of the Oscar-nominated Brazilian political biographical drama, I’m Still Here (Portuguese: Ainda Estou Aqui).
Walter Salles’ film, which was selected as Brazil’s official submission for this year’s Oscars and was additionally nominated for best international feature and best actress for Fernanda Torres, has already earned $18.7 million worldwide and is the highest-grossing Brazilian post-pandemic film in the country.
I’m Still Here is based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s book about Eunice Paiva (played by Fernanda Torres) as a mother of five children who is dealing with the forced disappearance of her husband, former leftist politician Rubens Paiva, during Brazil’s military dictatorship.
If you have not yet seen the film, be sure to do so (it is playing at the Somerville Theater and at Landmark Kendall square Cinema), and join us for a lively discussion. Refreshments will be served.
