Support the Center for Latin American Studies

Dear Colleagues, Students, and Friends of the Center for Latin American Studies at Boston University,

The growing relevance of Latin America on the world stage is beyond dispute. Changes in trade and diplomatic agreements with emerging superpowers in Asia and other parts of the globe, as well as anti-immigration policies, are redesigning Latin America’s role in the international system. The dynamism of Latin America’s manifold cultures, intellectual trajectories and literary traditions cannot be ignored within the landscape of globalization. An unprecedented number of Latin Americans in the US and other parts of the globe are influencing the cultures, economies, and politics of these immigrants’ native and receiving countries. As the character of Latin America shifts, we need new ways to conceptualize, study, and evaluate the processes that cross and intersect national borders within and outside this region.

We, the core faculty of the Center of Latin American Studies at the Pardee School of Global Studies believe that only an interdisciplinary, collective, and contextualized approach to the study of Latin America will help us understand the global significance of the region at large. We would be most appreciative if you help us train future Latin Americanists with a thirst for a deep understanding of Latin America and a commitment to social justice and global citizenship.

Help us consolidate the Center of Latin American Studies, for which we began a fund in 2017. The Center is expanding the visibility of Latin American Studies at BU at the national and international level and contribute to BU’s general education’s mission by enhancing diversity, civic engagement and global citizenship.  As a Center, we want to:

  • Foster innovative research and teaching through financial support for faculty and student projects.
  • Integrate a program of distinguished visiting faculty (intellectuals, artists and/or public figures) into the curriculum of our programs and degrees
  • Connect the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences across the Charles River Campus and the Medical Campus through the Center’s integrative activities
  • Maintain linkages with other universities and organizations around the world through our Visiting Scholars program
  • Bridge the gap between Latin American and Latino Studies through teaching initiatives, research, and outreach
  • Develop a regional consortium for students at BU and neighboring universities to study underrepresented cultures and languages of Latin America
  • Support undergraduate and graduate student research in Latin America

With gratitude for your support,

The Center for Latin American Studies
